OnceFarOff August 14, 2012 - 8:19am | I'm getting ready to run the Beyond the Frontier series with my kids. (Except Mutiny - too slow for them). I had their characters join up with the Clarion Royal Marines, and plan on having them play out the last two parts of the series as crew members of the Osprey attatched to the Frontier Expiditionary Force. Problem is, the maps of the Eleanor Moraes are broken up on the back cover of the pdf. Does anyone have complete maps? I have been looking to no avail since yesterday. Also, any pics of what the hull frame looks like would be extremely helpful. Thanks everyone... |
jedion357 August 14, 2012 - 10:06am | To your first question I'll have to look for my copy of the module (its somewhere) and see about a scan and stitch but hopefully someone else has what you need. IIRC the crew of the Moraes had to call for help which came from Clarion so why not rewrite the module such that you'r kids get to come to the rescue. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
OnceFarOff August 14, 2012 - 12:02pm | ^ Exactly. The mutiny module will be too lame for them. The Face of the Enemy is where the action starts and they give suggestions on how to play the module without having played Mutiny. I planned on including this adventure series to finish out their year long enlistment in the CRM. They finished the KH0 module, and last session, I had them run some of the scenarios from White Light II to keep them busy while I dropped some clues: 1. I had Strike Force Nova come for a visit in the aftermath of the Sathar attack on White Light. 2. I had newly promoted Lt. Klast tell the PCs about the Frontier Expeditionary Force (FEF) and the Osprey's assignment to it. After a couple of seesions of running ship checks and typing up a few personal plot loose ends, they'll get orders to go assist the Moraes. Then after all that, they get returned to White Light on the Osprey and meet Garlus Tylapper... On that tangent, I decided to not allow the kids to keep the Star Devil's corvette. But I approached it by having their favorite NPC (who stayed on Volturnus to find his brother) ask them to give up their claim in the ship and donate it to the Eorna as a Militia ship. On the map issue - I can splice the pics myself, I was just wondering if anyone had done it... Thanks- |
w00t (not verified) August 14, 2012 - 12:05pm | I can attempt to re-scan and upload to the Port Loren Public Library this week. Here's some images I started uploading in the past. Refer to: Mutiny on the Eleanor Moraes (a document page from the Original SF Art project). GJD crafted this Moraes-like image that you could use. |
OnceFarOff August 14, 2012 - 2:26pm | I just spliced the pics from the original scans and put them in a packet here: http://www.starfrontiers.us/node/6786 |
w00t (not verified) August 14, 2012 - 3:52pm | http://www.starfrontiers.us/node/6786 Thanks OFO! That's a good start for the next re-mastered project. :-) |
jedion357 August 14, 2012 - 4:24pm | I'm curious as to why you think this module is too slow or lame for you kids? I think picking up the campaign in module 2 makes sense with the set up you have with your kids already being royal marines, I'm just curious about the reasons you panned the module. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
Malcadon August 14, 2012 - 5:14pm | Like a lot of ships in SF, I'm quite impressed with all the wasted space found in the ship. My general vision of spaceships is as cramped as a submarine, but you can cram a lot of people in those quarters. But what I find even more impressive, are the semi-co-ed shower room. I would assume the shower rooms - like the head on the other side of the deck - are divided by gender, but the locker room is shared by both. Personally, I would remove the empty gap between shower rooms, or use it as storage space for soap, towels, and such. |
OnceFarOff August 14, 2012 - 8:54pm | @ Malcadon - if my kids ever want to join the UPF Survey team, I'll probably rework the map in maptool. It's hard to go back to the scanned in floor plans!!! @Jedion - My 9yo is really hyperactive. It's a struggle to get him to sit still sometimes to play. I discovered that during the AD0 module, right after they crashed on Volturnus, that the scarce supply/survival part of the module was a struggle for him to sit through. My 13yo does better - he grasps the more advanced game concepts and seems to follow subplots pretty well. He would probably do okay with it, but I'm trying to find the least common denominator. They both really perk up when it's time to fight Sathar... I think I'm going to save that module for the future. With a little re-write - there could be another mishap, and a different antagonist. I still have hopes that some day they may be able to enjoy doing survey missions. I plan long term to have the campaign stretch out to the 'south' of the frontier and possibly introduce new factions and perhaps a Gamma World type of planet that was nuked by the Sathar hundreds of years past. But I can always find some way to get them there... |
Jaxon August 11, 2013 - 9:13am | I TOTALLY agree with you. I made a campaign of the following: 1. The Warriors of White Light 2. AB - Face of the Enemy 3. AC - The War Machine 4. Frontier_Explorer_-_Issue_4 (Talnor communications ship & Saurian information) A third of the team were mismatches, vrusk, yazirians & dralasites on mixed worlds but, with little knowledge of their culture. There was 10 total - a large party. Jaxon Lee (H/M) Morgaine’s World <Military PSA> Sheila Skystar (H/F) Morgaine’s World <Tech PSA> Zixa (V/F) Gran Quivera <Biosocial PSA> Kamnoor (D/F) Gran Quivera <Military PSA> Yazee (Y/F) Gran Quivera <Biosocial PSA> I-gorban-gor (D/N) Triad <Tech PSA> Vax, Ch’lax (V/M) Triad <Tech PSA> Klobo (D/M) Pale <Tech PSA> Carl (H/M) New Pale <Tech PSA> Hachi Be Kragg Trefrom <Military PSA> The worked for several Mega Corps for a year and then started a freight company for another. Things were getting boring so, they saw an ad for White Light: "Openings! Prime positions available for qualified beings with knowlegde of spaceships...." They hired on and are completing the module. My plan is to: 1) transfer LT Dentin to the Osprey. 2) Transfer the CMS Osprey (and the CMS Flitter) to the Frontier Expeditionary Force. The Flitter is added because of the size of the party. The CMS can handle things with the Frigate and 3 Assault Scouts...they did before. The FEF will be: UPFS Flying Cloud - Frigate (Commodore Reider) UPFS K'Riss - Assault Scout (LT Yar) UPFS Doboru - Assualt Scout (LT Snyder) CMS Osprey - Assault Scout (LT Dentin) CMS Flitter - Assault Scout (LT - PC) 3) The team conducts a partol into...for lack of a better word - the Padda System (FS 11). It is a Binary System 4 light years from Theseus. It's two suns, with a HUGE asteroid belt and a frozen rock on the edge of the system. (I improvise) Here, the team will run into a Sather Scout ship. I'll let them chase it and then when they get near - BAM! Into the void. I don't want to damage the ships but, wet the teams taste buds. 4) Start AB - Face of the Enemy <Waller Nexus System FS 24>. The encounters will be the same. No need to beef them up. For the final encounter, LT Dentin will put a skeleton crew on the CMS Flitter and the team will be put on the UPFS Backdoor. The other ships will not come to the rescue unless things go bad. The team WILL be responsible to clear the entire ship. If asked why - "Gentlemen and women, the Sather have a tendancy to self-destruct their ships. We are light years from know space and if the Osprey or Moraes get damaged, we will not be able to rescue everyone. Because of this, you will be responsible to clear the entire ship. When the operation is over and the ship secured, we will then pull along side. That is all. You have your orders. Move out." This will be in Liberty System (FS30). 5) AC - The War Machine. The initial encounter will include 2 additional Mhemne Sather Fighters. The original ratio was 3 UPF ships vs 4 fighters. Now it is 4 UPF ships vs 6 fighters. This maintains the numbers advantage for the Sather. The CMS Flitter will be assigned to Operation Cracker. For these players it will be a mission of draw off and destroy. The other players will be part of Operations Ferret, attacking the space station L4. Because the team has the Flitter, the Sather need to maintain the numbers ratio. Since L4 produces Destroyers AND the module states that 2 MAY be operational - one will be operational. The destroyer has SAV Venomous class stats: HP: 50 ADF/MR: 3/3 DCR: 75 Weapons: LC, LB (x2), RB (x4), EB Defenses: RH, MS (x2), ICM (x5) *because of the inexperienced Mhemne crews - cut all crew skill percentages by 50% After the team finishes the battle, they will remain in system for a month, for Strike Force Nova to show up. This will allow them to rest. Maybe... 5.5) They receive a signal from the planet. It's Sather in nature. They go to investigate but, it's a Sather Listening Post (Star Frontiersman # 5 page 25). There are two changes: A) Room 3 is a Sathar sleeping area. A trough leads from the galley wall around to the four sleeping tanks. (there are 4 Sather crewman) B) Each crewman has 2 "Spider II" Peronal Robots. The stats are in "Face the Enemy" 6) The FEF teams up with the UPFS Aundrea Norma. This is a Talnor class Communication Vessel. The Aundrea Norma receives a signals originating from another system - this is Precipice. It is 11 light years away...and so starts "A Saurian Affair". I have only planned the first encounter - UPF UPFS Aundrea Norman (Talnor communication vessel) CMS Osprey (Assault Scout) CMS Flitter (Assault Scout) Saurain 4 Fighters 1 Ark Sather 3 Destroyers This is a long dawn out affair. Even though, the party has only completed the second encounter of The Warriors of White Light, the campaign is drawn to send them into the dark of space. This is what the spirit of Star Frontiers was about. OnceFarOff - I am right there with you. If you need any material - just let me know. Kudos to Jed for your mentoring and I give credit to Tom Verreault and Tom Stephens for the Saurian Sector & Affair, Ken Rolsten for "Face the Enemy" and "The War Machine" and finally to Douglas Niles for "The Warriors of White Light". Enjoy. |
Malcadon August 11, 2013 - 3:57pm | (addition to my last comment) Actually, in my games, I would merge the bathroom and showers into a singe co-ed area. You enter it from the locker room, where it would have two doorways leading to the bathroom and showers. The room on the other side would be freed for some other use. I have the setting as such, that modesty and public nudity are not a big deal, but Humans and Yazarians choose to wear clothing for hygienic reasons. I would also merge the crew quarters (with officers having smaller, but privet quarters), and add berths akin to Japanese "capsule" lodging. The quarters are where you sleep; the Recreation Deck is where you hangout on your free-time. The Bridge just befuddles my brain - the layout only makes sense if it lands on it's side like an Assault Scout ship, but it lands like an Apollo Lunar Module. |
Jaxon August 11, 2013 - 8:28pm | Well Mal, the bathroom suggestion makes sense. There was one magazine with a timeline that stated there is a point when see through clothing becomes the rage. It does not sound like clothing is an issue so neither should the bathroom/showers. |
Malcadon August 12, 2013 - 2:43am | Yeah, I remember that, Jax. It was do to an assassin with a parasitic attachment on his back. And that was at the tail-end of the timeline, to really know what their outlook on it was before that event. Although, it made the uniforms of that era sounds really sexy. |
jedion357 August 12, 2013 - 3:42am | Well Mal, the bathroom suggestion makes sense. There was one magazine with a timeline that stated there is a point when see through clothing becomes the rage. It does not sound like clothing is an issue so neither should the bathroom/showers. Actually its the Zebs time line and it was probably put in there to excite teen age boys. I know I liked it and I certainly liked the skimpy uniform dresses on Star Trek which was usually on TV everyday in reruns at the time. I have no problem with a uni-species bathroom which would be by extention uni-sex. i suspect that the other races would have the same complaint that human females have about sharing a bathroom with human males- bad aim. We can probably include yazirian males in that too especially if their preferred method evolved in their tree climbing past and it involved hanging from a grab bar from the ceiling and trying to hit the hole below. Talk about aim issues with both forms of voiding bodily waste! I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
