jedion357 February 26, 2012 - 10:48am | Was asked what would be good submissions for the SFMan in 2012 Character Races are well covered but you can always submit one. As for Core Four articles we've started a short run series that falls under this heading that we are calling the Yazirian Files so all things yazirian are good for that. things on the other core four races might be pushed back in the publication schedule. Common article heads of late: Creative refereeing, Creatures of the Frontier, System and Planetary briefs come in at a regular rate and I'm not worried about whether we'll have these they should continue to turn up but if you're looking to do something that will help consider the following topic headings Stuff that would be good to submit: Adversaries, Archetypes, Community News, Equiment, Equiment, Equiment (there is never enough equipment), Factions (cadres, cults etc), Classifieds (never enough classifieds), locations, mini modules, optional rules, KHs scenarios, star ships, deck plans, technical journal, puzzles, background and history. We have a mad number of remastered dragon articles and you can expect to see 2,3 or 4 per issue from now till whenever. Anyone have something You'd like to see? Personally I loved the disaster article that Terl Obar did on a wandering brown dwarf and would love to see more so to keep the disaster series going I've worked on some smaller scale disasters and you can expect those to turn up with titles like "Its Cold Out There" "What's Cooking: You Are!" and "Dont Go Into the Water" as well as "Blowing In the Wind" I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
w00t (not verified) February 26, 2012 - 1:51pm | I would like to see more encounters with maps. This year will be big on running SF online. Encounters are something everyone needs. |
TerlObar February 26, 2012 - 6:08pm | Well, I've got a ship that I designed for my game at the Con that I'm planning on submitting. I'll submit it after the Con as I don't think I'll have time to clean it up completely before then. Ad Astra Per Ardua! w00t (not verified) February 26, 2012 - 6:53pm | Submit it now! I want inside information! :-P |
TerlObar February 26, 2012 - 7:17pm | http://starfrontiers.info/wiki/index.php/CSS_Nightwind It's not inside information. The players will have access to this information to start. jedion357 February 27, 2012 - 6:55am | I like the ship tom, nicely done. It would make a great freighter or with minor conversions you could chop up a cargo bay and make it a lab for and exploration ship or install cold storage berths for a colony ship. I'm assuming a shuttle gets docked externally to facilitate landing? I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
TerlObar February 27, 2012 - 10:29am | You could definintely convert the cargo bay areas into other purposes if you wanted to. Each cargo bay has room for five regular decks. This was was just a pure freighter so it was designed to dock at stations to unload cargo. Although you could have a shuttle tether up beside it and have the cargo arms transfer the cargo over without any real problem. In truth, the cargo bays are actually big enough that an appropriately designed HS 2 shuttle would fit inside them. You've given me a good idea though. After I submit the original ship, maybe I'll work up some alternate configurations that convert the cargo bays into other uses such as labs, shuttle bays or passenger accomodations. Then you could potentially mix and match and customize the ship design. I think if you converted one cargo bay into passenger accomodations, you could probably put somthing on the order of 50 Journey class or 30 First Class cabins in that space along with the additional life support, common areas, etc needed. Basically a common deck, a machinery/storage deck and three decks of staterooms. Ad Astra Per Ardua! w00t (not verified) February 27, 2012 - 12:20pm | Perhaps pie-shaped sections could be mounted to the spine of the ship allowing several different configurations. Something like this; |
iggy February 27, 2012 - 3:46pm | Nice set of deck plans. What did you draw them with? -iggy |
Gargoyle2k7 February 28, 2012 - 12:30pm | Personally, I will soon be submitting two new creature articles, two new trade goods articles, and two new system briefs. I am also working on articles on religions, languages, new cults and cadres, terraforming tech, and a couple of corporate dossiers. Expect all the above by mid to late April. :) Long live the Frontier! |
w00t (not verified) February 28, 2012 - 12:41pm | Awesome sauce! Allen, are you on G+ ? If so add me and the Star Frontiersman. We have stuff in the queue, but I was a bit worried about the lack of submissions. I think by the end of this year we'll have some new blood based on my G+ SF campaign. Part of the Singe Evil Genius initiative. |
Gargoyle2k7 February 28, 2012 - 12:55pm | Sorry, not on G+. In fact barely online now (I hit the library once a month). I've been doing a lot of writing, though, and have plenty on the way. A few ads may show up in my next set of submissions, too. To whit - the popular game Dralasites Can't Dance! :) Long live the Frontier! |
Gargoyle2k7 March 6, 2012 - 11:20am | Just submitted: Field Guide to Frontier Creatures volumes 3 and 4, Trade Goods parts 2 and 3, a new race, the Fromeltar system brief, and an article on languages. More in a month or so. :) Long live the Frontier! |
rattraveller March 6, 2012 - 12:37pm | Hooray on the submissions Gargolye!!! At work someone let me too close to the printer so I went ahead and printed all SF issues. In reviewing content one thing stood out (REVIEW IS NOT COMPLETE) while there is alot of equipment there is practically no SPACE EQUIPMENT. Let me be clear there are plenty of ships and plenty of stuff to use planet side but there is not much to use aboard spaceships. Think we need more space stuff. Sounds like a great job but where did you say we had to go? |
w00t (not verified) March 6, 2012 - 1:03pm |
Think we need more space stuff. Bring it! |
w00t (not verified) March 7, 2012 - 8:42am | We also lack a lot of underwater gear. /note to self; Once I get done with my underwater adventure I should submit all the gear to SFman. |
rattraveller March 7, 2012 - 10:56am | I believe there is some water equipment in Mutiny on the Eleanor Moreas. Especially regarding Vrusk and Dralasite breathing. Sounds like a great job but where did you say we had to go? |
Karxan March 9, 2012 - 7:12pm | I also believe that I remastered an underwater article from Dragon. |
jedion357 March 9, 2012 - 7:51pm | I also believe that I remastered an underwater article from Dragon. There is a lot of remastered articles in the submission cue. I've probably slotted about 3 per issue for the next ten issues I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
w00t (not verified) March 9, 2012 - 8:06pm | If were keeping the size down to 80 pages, I wonder if we should offer the re-masters separately. I've struggled with this a bit, I like having them in SFman, however we don't have the room to do 3 per issue. We want our submitters to have preeminence. |
Karxan March 9, 2012 - 8:16pm | I would just go with submitters first then fill in with the articles. It will keep things going. |
AZ_GAMER March 9, 2012 - 9:15pm | I agree, submissions first, remasters as needed or to expand issue. After all we all want to see new stuff :) |
rattraveller March 9, 2012 - 9:57pm | So if we have alot of stuff what can we do to speed up the issue releases? Sounds like a great job but where did you say we had to go? |
jedion357 March 10, 2012 - 4:26am | So if we have alot of stuff what can we do to speed up the issue releases? Artwork is always the bottle neck. I remember when I use to lurk in the forum wishing another SFman would come out until I finally said to my self, "Self, if you want the Sfman to release a new issue then perhaps you should get involved." I've been hoping and praying that an artist with both skill and love for the game would turn out to be as prolific a submitter as I am but with artwork. Until that happens I've been pushing myself to draw weekly (goal was daily), buying how to art books, and when opportunity is there I will take a painting class on landscapes. I think some of my sketches are coming along and but I've got some ways to go. So right now major need is really a staff ILLUSTRATION artist that could look at the subject of an article and say yeah I can bang out a pen and ink sketch on that. CGI renders are great and AZ_gamer has been a huge support of the magazine but one problem we have to be mindful of is that the CGI renders tend to print very dark as they are full of color and usually dark colors. With putting the zine on lulu we have to be more mindful of this and that really calls for more traditional old school illustrative art done in a line drawing and pen and ink style. There are probably resources out there that we just are not aware of, for example: I just discovered that Malcadon has a deviant art account and quite a few drawing in it. One of his pictures I just love "the cloning chamber" but it was used in an indie game (Mutant Future i think) which means we cant use it but still I would have loved to have already been picking through his stuff for the past year. I'm starting to have so much communication going on with artist I'm schmoozing and but kissing on deviant art as well as some new artist that Larry turned up from other sources that I may change my activities some and not even do any actual editing as I really need to make sure that I'm not forgetting to check back with an artist that promised something- keeping all that communication straight can eat up a lot of time. Content is not really a problem- I've been know to look at the issue we're working on and say, "You know what would round out this issue? an article on X." and by the end of the evening I've written an article on X I'd say just keep submitting stuff, being mindful of the glut of new races. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
Gargoyle2k7 March 15, 2012 - 10:41am | On the subject of space and underwater equipment: while I am not much of an equipment guy, I am working on some articles about vehicles - air, land, space and aquatic. Maybe I should put these to the front? :) Long live the Frontier! |
Gargoyle2k7 March 15, 2012 - 10:42am | Oh, and I'm also working on some new BioSys gear; I'll try and add a few space and aqua items. Long live the Frontier! |
Karxan March 15, 2012 - 7:07pm | @Gargoyle2K7: That would be great. Looking forward to seeing what you submit. |
Gargoyle2k7 March 20, 2012 - 11:37am | The BioSys article is almost ready, as well as a random creature generation system. Long live the Frontier! |
