jedion357 February 11, 2012 - 5:09am | New idea: suppose a population of humans became cut off from the rest of humanity in a harsh or extreme environment that pushed them to adapt. Talking micro evolution not macro but changes can still be dramatic like those between the wolf and dogs. They will still be human and capable of breeding with humans. So thought will need to be given to what the extreme or harsh environment is and how it pressures them to adapt. For instance on a water world humanity could develop webbing between toes and fingers. TerlObar February 11, 2012 - 6:56am | Larry Niven does this to some extent in his Known Space books (of which Ringworld is a part). Humans from the high-g world Jinx are short, stocky and incredibly strong. Wunderlanders, a low-g world, are generally tall, slender and flexible. The one character smokes holding the cigarette with his toes. He has other variations for several of the other planets as well. But they are all earth-stock humans that have evolved on the planets they've been living on. Ad Astra Per Ardua! iggy February 11, 2012 - 12:49pm | The Death World novels also have this. The humans are on a high G world that has very dangerous aggressive predators. They become exceptionally strong and have tough bones and great immunity due to all the immunizations and adaptations their bodies have made to the local life. Their reflexes are faster too, yet they still have to mechanically assist that to beat the local predators. Check out project Gutenberg for it. -iggy |
