January 25, 2012 A 'Blue Marble' image of the Earth taken from the VIIRS instrument aboard NASA's most recently launched Earth-observing satellite - Suomi NPP. This composite image uses a number of swaths of the Earth's surface taken on January 4, 2012. The NPP satellite was renamed 'Suomi NPP' on January 24, 2012 to honor the late Verner E. Suomi of the University of Wisconsin.

In other words, it's been photoshopped? Evident by the lack of stars in the background? Wink

Perhaps you didn't understand what it's saying. "Swaths" indicates satalite imaging of the earth's surface from satalites. It's not one big image, but many little images put together. So no, they didn't get the stars in there, because they weren't taking images of the whole earth with stars in the background. They also appeared to have used a fisheye lense to do so.

By the way, do anyone use GoogleEarth? I have it loaded on my PC and it has a lot of awesome stuff - including maps of the Moon and Mars.

There is also a flight-simulator, so I can fly over the Moon in a propeller or jet aircraft, even though the low-gravity and lack of atmosphere would make such a flight impossible... But it is fun on less, and this is the sort of vacation I can afford! (do you know how much it cost to go to the Bahamas or Olympus Mons?)

Does that price for Olympus Mons include food and lodging? Because I think I can purchase a ticket on Priceline.com for less. Laughing

I was quoting coach. Since you are clearly an elite passenger, we're offering discounts today. That will be $182.62 with a donation of $1 to your favorite charity, and Pan Galactic will match your donation. Here's your business expense tax deduction slip, your charitable donation tax deduction slip, our destination guide for Olymus Mons and a coupon book for the Olympus Mons resort and grand hotel. Enjoy your flight, sir. And don't forget to vote Republican.

Shadow is right that is a bargain. To put that 185 mil in perspective Tiger Woods paid his wife 700 million to not write a book. ;)

That is a cool picture but a couple of things you should know.  It's not the most high res image of earth, appearantly not by a long shot but is one of the largest "single images" ever released.  There are bigger ones around but which have never been posted probably because the bandwidth just wasn't there for them to be enjoyed and downloaded.  And yes, it has definitely been photoshopped since the camera used to take it was an infrared camera and so doesn't produce the colors you see.  It was manipulated from the raw data to give it the color pallet you normally expect for visible images.

Still, it is a really awesome picture.

When I hear big numbers I compare them to that for perspective now.

as awesome as it is, I wished they would have waited until spring. The honeysuckle really is quite lovely when it blooms. As it is, it reminds me of Arizona...and depresses me. Cry
