jedion357 December 16, 2011 - 6:54am | What is that what does it do? Implication is the Frontier should thank PGC for establishing this, does that mean it is not completely in the PGC pocket? Certainly it is influenced by PGC but if its a good thing like the universal standards of time, currency, and trade language then it cannot be a straight mouth piece for PGC. There is a lot to thank PGC for in this early period.....it established the Galactic Board of Trade. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
rattraveller December 16, 2011 - 9:17am | Besides settling trade disputes and setting standards and regulations for trade and transportation of trade they insure there are no abuses of trade (Think China and how they artificially devalue their currency OR how some countries impose import taxes) They also enforce trade sanctions and embargoes with the help of Spacefleet. Sounds like a great job but where did you say we had to go? |
jedion357 December 16, 2011 - 12:20pm | I'm curious about the hows, whys and where fores. Probably little reason for PGC to set this board up when it was the only game in town. I'm guessing that it was, hmmm after SW2? The establishment of PGC as the major mega-corporation on the Frontier was designed into the basic rules as a starting point from which game referees could design their own corporate structures. The information given in the original Star Frontiers Alpha Dawn game was applicable during the time of the First Sathar War (SW1). The information given for the Knight Hawks game is specifically placed as the beginning of the Second Sathar War (SW2). I'm betting that PGC when it realized it had screwed up and allowed for other mega corps to get a footing whereby they could compete on an even keel with it moved to institute this board. Planning that it would be pro PGC it was an effort to prune back Streel and CDC but its become another layer of the Federal Government much like the Federal Trade Commission on Earth. Though perhaps different in mission than the Fed. In the early days it seems that PGC was the only game in town this of course goes against the latter statement in Zebs that a mega corp settles into one monopoly. However it would be natural for PGC to be diverse in the beginning and after latter legislation, possibly through the actions of the Galactic Trade Board each mega corp is assigned a monopoly. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
jedion357 December 16, 2011 - 12:26pm | My leaning is that the Galactic Trade Board is the result of PGC pushing the Council of Worlds to pass the Galactic Trade Act to regulate mega corps. Its chairman and members serves 5 years each on a staggared rotation so that there is only one new member per year? That would make the board about 5 or 6 beings strong. It controls the value of the credit as well as functioning as a supreme court in the area of trade and mega corps. Perhaps the provisions of the act prevent a mega corp from being tried by the Council of Worlds directly, instead its tribunal is the GTB and the members of the board are never to harsh on the mega corps realizing that they will land consultant gigs after their stint on the board. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
thespiritcoyote December 16, 2011 - 1:58pm | It goes back into the points that the PGC was the first Mega-Corp by charter and contract to the CW, they were given 'special sanction' to operate beyond the restrictions normally assumed and imposed on non-sovereign organizations... PGC was able to use this to great advantage, but was not a monopoly by questionable ethics as Streel, CDC, WarTech, and even GODco have become. In those early years there was no space fleet and PGC was a multi-industry monopoly (and have not lost their hold on multi-industry resources) with no competition, it was not a risk of loosing ground and market share for PGC, but a mater of altruistic cooperation in setting up what should be proper business law and custom with the council, and providing a watch service for the council. The actual role of this Galactic Board of Trade is not legislative or enforcement, and is more just a think-tank and watch-group that advises the Council and the other branches of UPF, the agencies of Constituent Sovereignties, and the private and public Organizations/Corporations, and sets a stage for the mutual interaction of the corporations as a place to bring their grievances and co-operations for review, before being sent to the proper portions of the individual governments for legal approvals. Oh humans!! We discover a galactic community filled with multiple species of aliens, and the first thing we think about is "how can we have sex with them?". ~ anymoose, somewhere on the net... so... if you square a square it becomes a cube... if you square a cube does it become an octoid? |
