Ascent October 5, 2011 - 8:36pm | With all the advances in technology recently, with corporations reaching toward the stars, cloaking technology, possible faster than light options for space travel on the verge of being discovered, laserbeam technology has already reached the realm of what was once science fiction with the creation of the laser rifle and soon the laser pistol, and the ever-blossoming computer technology, it almost seems possible that mankind's space adventures could begin in our lifetimes. What would you do if it did? What do you think that future will be like? Are we moving too fast? Where would you like to go? Shadow Shack October 10, 2011 - 10:37pm | I'd definitely apply for a space job. Even if it's "ship's boy" on a tramp freighter... |
jedion357 October 11, 2011 - 5:12am | My answer is a downer- my first priority is raising my kids and since I had them late in life I'll be getting up there in age and likely would only be up for space tourism- check a few things off the bucket list - try out 0g sex etc. see the moon, etc. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
Shadow Shack October 11, 2011 - 11:45am | Feh, take 'em with you. The family that space together stays together... |
Inigo Montoya October 13, 2011 - 8:56am | If my kids don't straighten up, I'll ship THEM off to space and get an early start on that dream called "empty nest syndrom". |
Ronin Lore October 13, 2011 - 9:52am | From what I've seen, the future is one part today, and one part prediction. For example, compare the movie "2001" with the actual events of the year of 2001, (omitting the obvious "big" event.) Both the movie and the year had a space shuttle. The differences were that real shuttle was not that streamlined, and Pan Am had gone out of business long ago. Both had space stations, but only the one in the movie had a Hilton Hotel in it. The time period we are gaming in would be similar. There would be fantastic machines, but they would be shaped by the necessities of the people of the time. One prediction about space travel is that, because of limited resources, we would be forced to live in cabins the size of walk in closets. The reality is that if we were to live in those conditions, we would end up killing each other before we got to where we were going. One way I think that rooms will be made to look bigger is with a wall sized display screen. A similar concept was used in the movie "Total Recall." Such a system could make the room look like it had a huge window on the exterior of the ship, or it could look like a view of planetary landscape. The screen could also be used to relay messages.
