Lunar Frontier adventures

Due to the 1967 Space Treaty preventing governments from owning property in space and the move for a Space Land Claims Legistlation I see some interesting angles for adventure in this setting.

Land claims under civil law based on use and occupation of that land set up a high profitable situation for companies and private individuals. There is a treaty baring governments on the moon. So who will regulate things? The kind hearted altruistic and honest corporations themselves? The situation is ripe for abuse as well as ripe for a new Declaration of Independence and a Lunar Republic. A lunar republic will only survive if the citizens are able to fend of mercenaries, err I mean security personnel and control valuable resources that they can continue to trade with Earth. This Process will take some time to come about.

In the meantime, what happens when a fugitive or criminal flees to the Moon? There is no government to file for extradition with. That situation is ripe for bounty hunters to be dispatched to Luna to bring back the individual. I can see the Reality TV show now, "Moondog the Bounty Hunter" coming to a cable station on your network soon.

Drug trade? Wonder what a dime bag will go for on the Moon? Will Sagan City become the Amsterdam of the Space? Where everything is legal and for sale at a price? What will prostitutes charge on the Moon? You got Miners and prospectors flush with cash and havent seen a woman in months- they'll pay quite a bit for a roll in the hay and if not pay then why not just take- what will a rape victim do on the moon? Will the corporation or business running the settlement do any for the victim?

Could almost envision a throw back to the Wild West where the citizens of a settlement hire a "Moon Marshal" to keep the peace. I can see a 20 year veteran of a Earth bound police force retiring and taking his pension before going to the moon to take a nice quiet job as a marshal. What will a badge look like? If it even is a badge and not a patch. It could be a cresent representing the moon arching over a five pointed star with 3 of the five points touching the corners of the cresent and the middle of the arch with the word MARSHAL across the star. Maybe its the union of the workers of the settlement that hires the marshal- creating tension with the management.

International LEA's are already given enough jurisdiction to accommodate security in terrestrial colonies (that is colonies on a terrestrial body including earth), such as Luna, Phobos, Deimos, and Mars.
Special United Port Protocol of Organized Tribunals may be pulled together to fill gaps in open space aboard permanent colony platforms in 'Open Space', such as the International Space Station and any improvements to the main body that may develop.
Security in any outpost, platform, or colony, may be diverse on paper, but will likely fall on the shoulders of an International Military Cooperative to enforce on location, International LEA offices to process on location, and Private Security interests to abide.
Private Security Jurisdictions will not extend beyond the 'owned module' but will still be under the jurisdiction of IMC Search and Seizure, if they fail to comply with ILEA investigations.

and that's space with no government... organized anarchy... Feudal.

There are places on Earth that are analogous under conditions to the Lunar Law and Government, there is historical precedent to the established code and custom (hounered; written and unwritten), and a driving goal behind a future ideal of fair use for all, these will set the conditions of civilized conduct between all interested parties, and as is always, those who fail to comply with custom will be dealt with by means that are in accordance to the threat to civility they impose.
No one in Space, or any Terrestrial Body within reach of any habitat of humanity, will be beyond the legislation and custom of Earth, and by extension; Luna, Phobos, Deimos, Mars, Ceres, Venus, Mercury, The Jovians and any of their Moons, any and all Extraterrestrial Platform Stations and Ships of Ports representative of those Terrestrial Bodies and Celestime Stations (and others yet to be considered and named), public or private, or even Humanity as a whole, and the arm of custom enforcement will stretch as wide as humanity has people to which custom is expected to be upheld.
Oh humans!! Innocent We discover a galactic community filled with multiple species of aliens, and the first thing we think about is "how can we have sex with them?".

I think that a lunar adventure/ mini campaign should not be something small or everyday- like bounty hunting, prospecting etc. but rather it should be momentus like that of 2001 A Space Odessy. Something that has the potential to radically change the setting. First contact with alien species, artifact that leads to a gateway to a new Frontier, potential destruction of the earth, etc.

Stories by Aurthur C Clark like A Space Odessy or Rama are certainly fodder for this.

my knee jerk reaction to the above would be a 2001 like storyline but with more action and opposition and that the object discovered at Jupiter would be a gateway to the Frontier we know and love but this is not set in stone.

Alien ruins on the moon: Tetrach facility with clear evidence that they were experimenting with primitive humanity. Multiple factions desire to obtain the secrets of the tetrach site.

artifacts lead to a moon of jupiter and the gateway to the Frontier, naturally there is a race to secure the Jupiter site. some primitive KHs action and boarding actions, sabotage of the PCs vessel and etc.

Use of the Jupiter Gate results in a storm appearing in the clouds of Jupiter's atmosphere ie a new eye spot storm forms so that there is now two and there is a 10% reduction in the mass of the planet. Implication is that use of this gateway will destabilize Jupiter.
