2012 is coming fast and its better to be organized and prepared ahead so I'd like to start some talk about what the 30th anniv. celebration entail? How should we celebrate it?

What themes and articles should we seek to have in the zine?

Events? I started threads elsewhere to talk about possibilities of a Virtual Con.

T shirt? Hat? 30th anniversary skien suite?

Contests?

Any other ideas?

I wish we could set our own booth at Gencon or something. Flags, banners, handouts, a raffle with cool prizes...like replicas of the old laser rifle pictured in the basic game.

You mean something like this?

Looks like that but made out of more substantial material; usually copper tubing and toy guns

There is a company that makes metal parts that fit over nerf guns. Seen them at gen con.

This site has produced a great deal of fantastic materials keeping this ‘so-called’ dead game alive. There are;  new rules, new classes, new skills, new races, new equipment, new ships and deck plans, and even a new gaming system.  I have found a lot of great adventure ideas through this site as well as the Frontiersman which is associated here with this site. As I went to bed last night, waiting to fall asleep I thought about what could be an ultimate tribute to 30 years of what I consider to be the coolest RPG ever. I think that the ultimate way to celebrate the 30 year anniversary of our beloved game is to create a professional quality module.

This site produces so much SF material that it is mind boggling. What I haven’t found are new adventure modules. I thought that a module that marries the original game with some of the new materials that have been developed here or posted here would be fitting. Something that isn’t too drastic so it is still predominantly cannon, but provides in routes to new ideas and materials. The main action or adventure needn’t be overly loaded with every new trick. I think it would be cool to introduce a  lot of new material in the form of background information. There is always the cliché ‘news feed’ to introduce new  corporations, factions, science developments, and such.  Of course it wouldn’t have to use the cliché methods. Minor encounters with new races in the star port or the characters ship is escorted or saved from a pirate attack by a squadron of the latest fighters. By at least introducing new materials, it will provide a spring board for future supplements.

If there is to be a 30 year anniversary ‘product’, I believe it should be a grand slam. At the risk of being morbid, who knows if anybody will be here to produce a 40th anniversary product.

w00t will, he's a robot.

Seriously I appreciate your comment and you are not the first person to communicate these ideas, though maybe the first to state them elloquently in a post. I've recurited someone to write a mini-module for issue 18 and I've set my hand to doing the same (though I have two such in production so that issue 19 has a follow on module as well- I was feeling over whelmed by one project and started a simpler one that will likely be the one in issue 18).

So to sum up your comments- the zine is great but more module like material would be better. I'm curious about Locations- is map tiles and locations detailed in the zine a help to people to cobble together an adventure?
Anyone else have a comment?

EDIT: BTW RE: grand slams, something turned up in my email in box today that may just qualify as a grand slam but its classified and if I told you I'd have to kill you. Suffice it to say I freaked out and babbled like a derranged dralasite.

Well seeing as how I cannot reboot as you can... I'll stifle my curiosity.  ;-)

What I had in mind was something just short of a boxed set emblazoned with 30th Anniversary! on the front. Something that would be free standing; not necessarily tied to the zine or even this site. Btw, do you know what the circulation of the zine is?  What is the 30th Anniversary due date? Would it be possible as a project with a small group? Unfortunately I am not a heavy lifter for this sort of operation. I am a competent and creative story developer (at least I had some pretty impressive D&D campaigns back in the day) but I have no skills with art or computer tech.

Well on the bright side, not having a specific month of publication gives you the whole year to choose from for a release date. I was thinking of a module that would be a new mark on the end of the timeline (showing that the SF universe continues on after 30 yrs). I liked what I read on your Bounty thread. However, if it were for an anniversary issue I would recommend not using too many components of previous published adventures. I would try to focus on the new things. New location, new creatures… I really like what I have seen of your Warriors of the White Light II.

When I was thinking about an anniversary module, I was thinking of those guys who introduced me to SF back in college. They aren’t on this site or even current meddlers of SF…as far as I know anyway. Danny? Rob? Allan? Are you guys here? I was thinking of something that might entice more of us (those) old guys to take another look at the game.

Truth to tell we don't have all year for the anniversary issue, because I'm so very excited about something that is coming out that I'll freaking burst if I have to wait longer than the beginning of the year for it to come out. Honestly I just intended bounty as a mini module in the zine. The adventure that was bugging me and that I needed a break from was Mercy Mission to Madderly's Star. Its big enough for a full module by itself and it puts a new mark on the timeline, though I don't know if its what you were looking for.

Honestly, I am just throwing out ideas. What I had in mind would be awesome. But then again, I'd love to have a Star Frontiers Coffee Mug. I understand the inability of time and prior obligations. I've been putzing around with ideas for a couple of years and have next to nothing to show for it outside of my mind. It's just a shame we weren't prepared. Maybe we should get started on the 35th anniversary today. That way when w00t reboots he won't have to start from scratch. Tongue out

thats just for the issue 18 and I think you'll be surprised by what has fallen into our lap. I've already decided that each issue next year is a 30 anniversary celebration. And we have time if we start now to do a virtual con (see the convention project for more details) I suggested a patch for registering and paying a nominal fee as some sort of give away helps and as a former scout master I rather like patches. Mug is cool too cause I LOVE coffee but it drives the registration fee and shipping cost up. with a patch I could just drop one in an envelope with a stamp. If we could expect 20- 30 registrants then a patch would work but if only 8-12 then coffee mug would work it doesn't take long to get the stuff done (probably longer with a mug). What I dont want to happen is to organize a virutal con and only get one registrant (w00t) and be stuck with the minimum number of items the sports place will let me order.

So if there is no interest in a virtual con then maybe we can do a 30th anniversary mug (at cost) I suspect that since the individual cost of a mug is higher than a patch that they'll allow for a minimum number for an order would be about 12. the first 12 are the most expensive as there is a set up charge and you have to recover that but when you go to order another group they'll allow you to only order 6 and theres no set up charge since your art is in the computer. thats how it worked when I did hats.

If somebody wants to set up a "30th Anniversary" merchandise shop, check out www.cafepress.com

Be warned that you can't use copyrighted material without permission, so any logos/artwork etc would have to be free and clear of such infringements.
I'm not overly fond of Zeb's Guide...nor do I have any qualms stating why. Tongue out

Not sure I want to set up a merchandise shop but will organize an online gaming event and call it a virtual con if there is interest in it. I'm just not interested in doing the work if the return is 4 people participating. it doesn' figure.

I hear ya. I was just going off the original post where you commented about a T-shirt and hat.

Last time I checked, CP doesn't have a skeinsuit yet...
