I'd like to propose a new option that I believe will simulate reality a little better while being as playable as MR in the original game. Currently UPF ships have higher ADF /MR than sathar ships. However if a sathar ship holds its MR till it closes it can effectively turn as fast as a smaller more nimble ship ie if it holds is MR it can probably turn twice in two hexes same as the UPF ship. My basic idea is that the bigger the ship the longer it takes to turn all that mass. So small ships will have a small MR like 1 and be able to turn once per hex moved while a biggership would have a 2 or 3 requiring 2 or 3 hexes between turns. Monstrous civilian freighters might have a MR of 5. This will give you a game where nimble little ships get to dance and turn inside of bigger ships. It will also give you a very tactical game. For the board game version ships simply have assigned MR values but in the campaign game a more detailed set of rules would allow players to play with mass to thrust ratios. This will of course necessitate working out MR for loaded and unloaded freighters and create situations where a freighter captain might jettison cargo to lighten his load and gain an edge in MR. Most ships HS2-3, would have a MR of 1. 1SW era fighters and shuttles would only have MR of 1. Concerted civilian ships in 1SW have fairly high MR for their size class. SATHAR ships will have poor MR with only their fighters coming close to the latter UPF designs. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
