I just watched the Sci-Fi movie HunterPrey on netflicks last night and thought it might need a fair shout out here. If you havent seen it yet I would recommend it. It should be noted that this is a low budget film but low budget does not mean low quality. It has a few expensive effects shots thrown in to keep things visually interesting but for the most part it is a very character driven film. The premise pays alot of hommage to EnemyMine but has its own completely independent storyline that has taken obvious inspiration from EM but is a completely unique and separate work on its own. There is an interesting plot twist about the pursued alien that I will not reveal or spoil here but it was worth waiting to find out. I thought I would give it 15min's to see if I would like it and ended up watching the whole thing. It does gain momentum and I would suggest giving it a good half hour before making a rash judgement. The cinematography is really good and clear. The audio is great! since it is character driven story the audio is right up close an personal and you hear everything from equipment moving aroung to gravel shifting under their boots....I bring this up not because its really over-exagerated or anything, just that it is rare to find a small budget movie put such attention to detail. The props are interesting and well detailed when you get a chance to see them up close. The back story is a little vague but understandable and leaves you interested in more.

If you havent seen the movie yet I caution you that the "soldiers", who have a very boba-fett esque body armor to them, that their appearance makes more sense when they are finally revealed.

Overall one of the best B movies I have scene in the last 5 years.

Hmm, sounds like a hoot. I'll re-activate my Netflicks account just to take a gander at it. Thanks (unless of course it's a really REALLY bad movie, as then I'll have to wag my finger at you for making me re-activate my Netflicks account).

Caught it thought is wasn't too bad lots spent on props and not much on location. Only really bad part was when the alien lost his helmet in the fight and totally blew the "we are not human scene" since you already saw one of their faces.
Sounds like a great job but where did you say we had to go?

While the loss of the helmet revealed may or may not have spoiled that suprise but the real suprise reveal is the pursued alien, they did a great job keeping the suspense on that one until they decided to do the reveal.

Yeah, it's definitely worth a look or two.  Fun movie.
Long live the Frontier!

Watched this last night, great flick! Thanks for sharing. :-)

Wife unit thought it was a little dry in places.

Nit-picks
  • I would have rather seen an orbital comm relay station sync communications between Centauri 7 and Alpha Station rather than allow a handheld device to talk several light-years away.
  • In order for the bloodsuckers to survive they would need large prey, I didn't see any prey capable of supporting that size creature.

Cool doesn't sound all that nit-picky to me... I am sure there is some ret-con that can be applied... but those sound like pretty typical oversights. For SF I Imagine what you expected would be correct, but what does holy-wood know of SF...Foot in mouth what does it even remember of Golden-Age Sci-fi?

Trek-Wars and all the borderline Type-III Societies, gives holy-wood room to make all the leaps of discontinuity they care to ignore. I prefer to see Star Frontiers in a much more Golden-Age Sci-Fi friendly, Borderline Type I Era.

Still waiting for a netflix slot to come around, I'll get it eventually.

I agree on the comm device that it is far fetched that it could communicate those distances and be that small.

The blood sucker monsters thought, that is actually explained in a way. Remember all those large animal bones all over the place baking in the sun. Well obviously there are large animals on the planet that the characters do not encounter on camera and most likely those blood suckers are parasites from the bigger critters.

Like in Pitch Black, they show the littered remains of large herd animals, but never those animals themselves.
Makes one wonder if there was more to the ecological shift, recently, and if so could the elevated aggression be a result of famine.

I noticed that as well, but the fact that none were shown living bothered me slightly. I was expecting to see the pack animal from Stargate. :-)

Maybe I'll whip up some creatures stats and an image for the webzine. Nice annoying creature for the party to wake up too. "The sun shines over the horizon waking most of the party up. Give me an STA roll to see who's still asleep. Biz'yaryak, your belly button feels numb and you notice your hair matted in places."

ghl'phraq-ing Awesome... just watched it... and that is my rash judgment!

could have been cool if the alien prisoner didn't reveal until the final reel, and had more screen time for the soldiers, waiting that long may have taken it a bit far for most tastes though.

Totally sympathised with the poor bugger cracking open some other alien's rations, reminded me of the first time I opened a bag of dehydrated Vrusk grubs... but I have since learned to eat silkworms on seaweed, without making a face.

As far as the communication distances, I get the impression that there was a lot of relay going on.
The parasites needing bigger prey, yeah, that one big set of bones, they were as big as an elephant, and actually looked a little like the dark-dwellers from Pitch Black. Maybe the large herd beasts only come out during the short night, to avoid the heat, and only need the short time to forage for the scarce food resources.
other than that, it only gives a look at one biome's terrain, surely more variety exists, even if it is a small satellite of a gas giant. (I can see one hanging in the background sky in a few scenes, and what apears to be two main, and maybe one minor, stellar class bodies, yeah, short nights.)
