jedion357 April 25, 2011 - 12:57pm | Any Air Force (or similar) techs out there? We have radar as KHs equipment but what about vehicle mounted radar? Anyone know what the current range of a jet mounted radar is? Ball park numbers? The way I see it you have 2 options: nose mounted radar for attack air craft and then roof mounted equipment for ground and air vehicles that while not as big as whats on an AWAC would look similar and fill a similar role. Question I have is that on a nose mounted radar I would not expect it to have a good 360 degree look but then a jet is moving pretty fast so its focus aught to be what is in front of it (except of course during a dog fight) So basically I dont expect vehicle mounted equipment to have the same range as star ship mounted equipment nor the same size or cost. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
Captain Rags May 15, 2011 - 9:18pm | Might want to check this site out for an idea on radar. We gots some awesome tech for our tax dollars. http://www.jolly-rogers.com/airpower/ah-64d/64d-av.htm My SF website izz: http://ragnarr.webs.com |
rattraveller May 16, 2011 - 8:35pm | In game terms, Radar is a general term for something that scans the immediate surroundings and gives an image of what is around the vehicle. Given the better tech availible to characters then "radar" is something that as long as consistency is maintained in terms of cost-size-power-capability then all should be good. Sounds like a great job but where did you say we had to go? |
dmoffett July 2, 2011 - 8:25am | My battalion has a radar that is mounted on a large 5 ton MTV, towing a MTV family trailer with a large generator mounted on it. (the radar is used to detect incomming Artillery/mortar shells for the brigade. It can detect them in flight and pintpoint the origin of the shells on the ground. It's purpose was to direct counter-battery fires. It can detect shells as far away as 40 miles, it can find small arms fires even closer. Yes Small arms, rifle shots. If I aim at a sniper on a building and my shot misses him the radar will pick up my shot. If I shoot down an alley or a street, it won't pick it up. It is of course line of sight. It was designed for counter-battery fire but is powerful enought to detect small arms fires. It is computer controled and very user friendly according the guys in the Survey/Radar Platoon. You can learn a lot by serving with the Field Artillery. Although I would love to go back to the tanks. The bombing starts in five minutes. |

Given the better tech availible to characters then "radar" is something that as long as consistency is maintained in terms of cost-size-power-capability then all should be good. So for game terms should be simply list "Scanners" as optional vehicle equipment- specify a wt., a cost and capabilities and not worry about matching real world radar? There is an upside to that approach- no one can nit pick and say your radar is incorrect. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
