I recently uploaded some old files on rank structures that I had found quite a while ago on the web
original web site: http://www.starfrontiers.com/Solanus/index.htm

I never critically looked at this stuff but just saved it because it looked good.

At anyrate I got a message from a member with some really good critique of these. The problem is that I already deleted the message and cant do the cut and paste of his comments.

His comments stemmed from his experience in armed forces and while I immediately recognized some of what he was talking about, having been an air force brat, I simply had not considered those points. I'm hoping that member will chime in as he'll be able to explain his comment better then I can.

At any rate this thread is to discuss those rank structures from the above site.

Slightly off topic but close:

Star Trek had shirt color (and man it sucked to be wearing a red shirt unless your name was Scotty)

During napolean's time Grenadiers had, besides big honking bear skins hats which were an attempt to make the infantry man look taller and more imposing - a bit of physchological warfare, had a grenade symbol

During the ACW infantry had a hunting horn and cavalry had crossed swords etc.

I'd like to see some symbolic badges for the space fleet and militia spacers

Astrogators: a sextent with a telescope super-imposed over it diagonally

Rocket Gunners: Crossed rockets

Beam gunners: ?

Engineer: ?

Pilot: what else could it be but Wings?

Marines/ naval infantry: crossed rifles

Support personnel: ?

Hey Jedi,

It was I who sent the e-mail about ranks.
Here is a copy of what I sent:

I was just looking at your graphics for the UPF rank structure. I really like it! I have two sugestions though.

First the enlisted ranks are great but there is one missing element. In all earth rank structures I have encountered serving the last 19 years, there has always been a distinction made with the "stripes" between the private soldier and the Non Com. For instance, in the Air Force the lower four "Airman" ranks have there stripes transecting the central star, while the NCO begins to have "rockers" I.E. stripes that are below the central star. The begining of the senior NCO ranks then have the chevrons pointing up. This devides the rank structure into three tiers. If you look at the american Navy and Army you will find that a similar distinction for the NCO ranks is used. I would suggest that the "Spacer/ Private" Ranks have part of the stripes obscured by the cenral field in a manner simmilar to the AF rank structure.

Second, I notice that the highest rank of Command specialist is without an insignia. I find this strange. Most "slick sleeves" are the lowest ranking. The highest ranking always have insignia, speaking for the enlisted, the more stuff I have on my sleeve the better I feel about it.

Just thought you might use this info to flesh out the structure a little bit.

PS I noticed you used some of the AF rank names for the "Consolidated" force. Cool, but what is the "consolidated" force?

ya know guys... there should be enough info to turn this into an article. Bill started some images, I could finish them up. It would be really cool to the an "official" article on structure that we can use in our modules that get passed around here. :-)

I'll talk to jedion tomorrow, see what he says....

w00t, out!

Here is the Land Fleet ranks.

I will begin work on the rating system for the UPF as soon as I can. I think that there should be no duplication in career fields between the two services, so I will build the chart off of that premise.

I think those downloads should have been in this project, imo. Links for easy access.
