AZ_GAMER March 30, 2011 - 12:22am | For those of you who are not familiar with this project I have been working on my own space tactical combat simulator game. It's called Space Fleet Commander and is a fun D100 system space battle game for minatures or carboard counters. I encourage you to visit the existing thread at DWD Studios to see where the game is at in development. A rough copy of the game rules exist and a few DWD Staff have copies at this point for review. There of course are some issues on the table in the development of the rules system. I have endeavored to maintain a "rules-light" atmosphere in creating the system so that game play will be fast fun and expandable. The Ship movement system is very similar to SFKH and there are some other inspirations present as well. The core setting of the game is in the "Titan Rising" Fictional Universe which I created for my comic book series. Join the discussion and contribute if you like. |
AZ_GAMER March 30, 2011 - 12:36am | There has been some discussion on creating a Rules-Divorced game system for SFC. I have given this a lot of thought and have even done conversions of SFKH ship stats over to the SFC system. However, I have to admit that creating a generic or rules-divorced game takes away from the overall "feel" of the game. While large projects like Frontierspace are designed to be rules-divorced from the ground up, this project is much smaller and may not easily fit into that broad a category. When I want to play SFKH I reach for the SFKH box and know that when I play this game the Klingons are not coming to dinner. Like wise when I play Fasa's Star Trek TCS I know that the dralasites will not be gumming up the warp drive. What I am getting at is this, while open ended rules-divorced games are very flexible they don't have a rules/setting marriage that creates a new realm to play in. What do you think, on a small project like this how important is it to make the game rules/setting divorced. |
w00t (not verified) March 30, 2011 - 8:57am | I believe a boardgame and setting go hand in hand. It should be fairly simple to convert to a new setting, after all it's mostly ship stats and commander effects have the most setting-specific feel. Correct? Link to topic; |
w00t (not verified) March 30, 2011 - 8:58am | btw, love this ship. It gives the impression of power and maneuverability. |
thespiritcoyote March 30, 2011 - 6:45pm | Looks like a tennis ball cannon, but i like it, can i get one stripped out for cargo? (from a position of generic response, not knowing the game in question) I agree, game and setting go hand in hand, no mater the game or settings type. Rules help support the feel, change the rules, change the feel. Change the setting, and rules discrepancies (inivitable even when co-developed with the setting) become more obvious. Rules-light varients can be easeier to adapt to a new setting, where you only need to add new rules, or can easily see where tweaks can be applied. If basic physics are simulated well, tho', adding is even easeier, if not and the rules reflect specific physics-conditions, the divorce will be fatal to both game and setting. Oh humans!! AZ_GAMER March 30, 2011 - 7:35pm | Pictured above is a Colonial Space Fleet Prometheus Class Battleship. Similar "configurations" can be assembled for a cargo transport but this one is strictly a warship. |
thespiritcoyote March 30, 2011 - 9:08pm | What are the others, smaller, fighters? Can I get a couple of those in a shuttle configuration? Looks like a nice tug/lifter for the cargo pods. What threatens the trade lanes, and how much escort can I expect from the CPF? Will I be expected to aid threats on imediate muster, or burn hard to the rear when threated? So many questions, is there a nice data-scrit I can transfer to my padd from the Trade and Traffic Beurau? Oh humans!!
