w00t (not verified) February 12, 2011 - 9:56pm | Only one thought comes to mind - interesting desgin. The tanks looks like a big - potentially explosive - target. |
AZ_GAMER February 13, 2011 - 11:49pm | its hard to say precisely what the tanks are for. They may be additional egineering machinery, thrusters, or coolant tanks for the atomic drive. Fuel or volatile fuel storage actually wasnt the first thing that came to my mind when puting the model together. Balancing out the shape with some equipment was what I was going for when I assembled the model. |
w00t (not verified) February 14, 2011 - 11:19am | Suggestion; what about using different structures? Maybe have them not all rounded. The tanks remind me of modern earth space technology - I get the feeling of old school space designs mixed with modern frontier designs. |
iggy February 15, 2011 - 10:46pm | However, tanks are an efficient shape for storage and construction. Just because they are familiar to us does not mean that they will be old school by frontier technology. We construct submarines like this because it is the strongest design to resist the pressure yet be a vessel. The strongest design is actually a sphere. This is why they are used in our space designs today. -iggy |
AZ_GAMER February 18, 2011 - 10:44pm | I was not really aiming for an old-school earth type space craft design. However, it does stand to reason, many times it has been discussed on this site how SF space travel technology is only marginally more advanced then our own scientific potential. I say scientific potential because if we really applied our selves and our resources we could be much farther ahead in our space exploration technology then we currently are. |
iggy February 19, 2011 - 1:59pm | Yes, Yes! I would love to live in a world where the Trillions that are squandered on pushing each other around or just hording it to the few were spent on expanding and bettering each other. Now-a-days it seems like many are not so interested in advancing and exploring as just enriching themselves. But back to the star ship design. I don't see the designs as old Earth tech but rather economical. In a sleek stylish design, say the naboo designs of Star Wars, the tanks are there just covered up with pretty skins. If we look at sea vessels as a model, the pretty designs are not pushed for utilitarian ships. The pretty skins are applied to the fun ships like private yachts and cruise ships. -iggy |
AZ_GAMER February 19, 2011 - 2:27pm | I can easily armor plate or cover the tanks on the model, however, artistically I wanted to put something in engineering area that broke up the descending flow alittle so the sillohouete didnt look like a tad pold. |
