Star Frontiers and adapting Legos (Star Wars, etc) to the game.

Hey, folks,
I'm having a renaissance with Star Frontiers and other "old school" RPG's. My two boys have a bathtub-load of Legos, especially Star Wars and other "sci-fi" type figures, etc. I'm in the process of adapting the game so that we can integrate them together. The first thing I had to figure out was scale. That was relatively easy. I've figured out a 1:50 scale which equals 2cm per meter and three Lego "pips" per meter (or two if diagonal).

Has anybody else done any of this and would be willing to share insights? We're beginning to create additional races to fit the various Lego characters. Make parallels to the various weapons, vehicles, etc.

It's been a lot of fun! Anybody care to start some collaboration? (haven't figured out a believable Vrusk yet...)

...let me also add that this project just began yesterday (Dec 18, 10), so we're pretty early in the process!

for a dralasite you could make him out of Fimo or Sculpty (the clay you bake) and create a few to the right scale - legos are almost too boxy for doing dralasites- and probably no harm in using them with legos.

PS: /Welcome to the revival
I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers!

Flying yazirians! what a cool idea. Smile

You could spec out the Lego vehicles as well 'cause really Lego's are just another type of chit/counter. Heh.

I can envision pics of Lego gear and weapons stated out for SF.
Here's a great resource for pics and names; http://www.brickarms.com/toys/weapons.aspx

If you start a project I'm sure people would join and collaborate. When the project is finished we could make a pretty PDF download and maybe include it in the Magazine.

Welcome to the site!

Before baking, use the Lego gear to make holes, stubs for a helmet and put clothes on the mold for sizing.

We're all drooling over the brickarms site now. :-)

Perhaps, yes, a project will be in order. Not yet, though, my time is limited. We'll see how far I get with things this holiday "off" week.

Another way to create your layout would be to use leog "Design By Me." This program is downloadable from the Lego website

This is a great idea. Especially the later suggestion to include holes for weapons, etc.

You may also be interested in our thread about new plastic minatures. I will be ordering a prototype production of our first knight hawks frigate at the end of the month and will be posting results soon.

Not sure how helpful this will be but if your doing a Lego project then watching these can help with scenery and little odds and ends.

I present Lego Zombie Videos:

I did NOT have anything to do with these besides enjoy them.
Sounds like a great job but where did you say we had to go?

Cool idea! Well, actually, we ended up going on a spree and getting a hold of as many SF miniatures as we could and are using those. The boys are enjoying the "pure" SF game, with chits and miniatures, so I don't want to go too far into confusing the issue. Smile Yesterday, we began our first KH "Basic" scenario.

I did however, get a hardback copy of the Star Wars Revised RPG (West End Games) which we may use for the Legos, haven't looked at it too much other than to see it's a d6 game. We'll see how it goes.

Still not sure who'd enjoying the SF rennaisance more...  well, I guess I am.

Stay posted for updates on the new plastic minatures I am having prototyped from a company in France, if sucessful and by that I mean good quality we should be able to start doing mock ups for other SFAD and SFKH minatures. Our first project is a 2.7 cm long frigate I will do the SFAD mini's in 25mm tall scale but have not idea on the price. There are of course some serious problems trying to create a canon Sathar mini - the serpentine apendages send my modeling software into fits.

Sounds fantastic! I'm already a bit concerned of preserving the miniatures I've purchased from damage and/or corrosion. Lead was not a good thing to use retrospectively! (but then, it's amazing some of these lasted as well as they did for 30 years)

As long as the new plastic miniatures are affordable, you can count on a customer here! (especially SFAD).

1.) Can you post larger pictures? Can your posts and pics be used in the Magazine?
2.) Is it possible to take a lead SF miniature and make a cast so you can produce more?

Possible? Yes!  Legal? No!

I have made RTV rubber molds before and drop cast white metal in them.  For the best results the mold should be high temp vulcanized rubber and spin cast.

@iggy, illegal?

@SMK - you can upload them as a submission on http://starfrontiersman.com or PM me and I'll send you my email.

We should include the pest place to obtain Lego's (cheaply). We have some.. but wow... expensive. I ended up gluing my songs Atlantis Lego's so we wouldn't loose parts. lol.

I think he meant illegal in that the mini is someone's IP, and can't be reproduced for profit. Since it wouldn't be for money(right?), I think it would be perfectly okay.

Maybe.

Yes I mean that it is NOT legal to copy miniatures because of copyright.  Now if we produced miniatures and made them open source that would be cool.  However I have never gotten my hands on any green stuff to try my hand at sculpting my own.  Unfortunately I think that I would have to be careful and not sculpt any Vrusk, Yazirians, or Dralasites that I actually called by that name.  I believe it was jedion that posted a site that does mini ship of BSG and space 1999 but by code names.  What would be the common (code) names for Vrusk, Dralasites, and Yazirians?  What do they call themselves.

BTW, I made a mold of a Lego once and cast white metal in it.  It has too many sharp corners and catches air bubbles too easily for the tin lead alloy I use.

dralls with out equipment sculpt easily but then you can add a extra weapons from anther source (Warhammer 40k is a good source for spare weapons)- I've had friends give me their extra 40K weapons or I've painted figures for people in exchange for their extra weapons; plus some companies will sell weapons for those people who do conversions (ebay is a source for extras)

sculpting a yaz- start with a dolly(human shaped armiture with a rudimentary head) for a human, Reaper has them as well as other companies though I'd look for a thin lanky dolly intended for sculpting non-heroic humans or elves to do the yaz. I would start with posing and sculpting the equipment and clothing first and add the pataguim (wings) last.

Vrusk- this is a tough one- I would say that an vrusk dolly or armiture should be produced first which, once cast in white metal will facilitate quick sculpting of mirad "Space Mantis" miniatures.
I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers!

Lego actually has an armature person figure, I saw it on the site, its called a skeleton or robot skeleton or something like that which has a lot of open space in it. That model could be covered with a sculting clay to create different characters.

I think were at a loss for a true vrusk though, there just isnt anything like that out there yet.

i don't know if it's available but you might try looking for a Thri-Kreen (Mantis warrior from D&D)miniature for the upperbody and head and maybe a giant insect like a grasshopper for the lower body and putting them together.

Or, maybe you can simply call the Dralasites "schmoo."

Update? How did this ever turn out?

I have about 10,000+ lego's that I use to collect then to play Fantasy
miniture battles with, sorta like AD&D's Battle System.
Perhaps I might help with some rules if need be, else I have a copy of
some miniture rules that I acquired from, not sure where, that I probably
could scan so you could take a look at. They are perhaps 20 or less pages
in length. Battle System might be the answer since it was TSR made.

Cogito ergo sum; I think therefore I am.

I think the first step is for someone to start a Project. Then we can start collaborating. In fact, I think this would be a good running article for the Star Frontiersman; take a new piece of Lego gear, vehicle or character and write-up a brief article. We can use the images from brickarms as-is. :-)

Hrm... another idea.
I've been writing solo-adventures for Star Frontiers (something jedion and I cooked up last year) and I've been stuck about how to integrate miniatures. I think most SF players have children and therefore Lego's. Right?
