Deryn_Rys November 1, 2010 - 8:37am | I am currently seeking advice on how to best approach a project in this wonderful place and how to best make the rule set that I talk overmuch about available to those interested in actually seeing or playing in my sandbox, (without stepping on the toes of anyone who might have some objection to my adapted rules or the material therein, even though there is no intent by me of making a profit on these rules as they stand). Anyway that being said, I thought I might share a little bit more of the content of these rules with you. So here is a glance at the core planets of the Frontier. You will note that they are somewhat different from the star systems that you know and love. The location codes include the sector tag (1-8) followed by the distance from the Frontier center (Prenglar) in light years, and for you astrogators out there determining actual travel time between systes is as follows, simply subtract the lower distance from the greater distance and add ten/sector of difference between the systems to find out the actual travel time, and divide this by the type of Hyperdrive you're ship uses to determine how long it takes to go from point A to point B. so here'a a glimpse of a small part of my expanded Frontier. w00t (not verified) November 3, 2010 - 12:31pm | No issues here with you wanting to make money on your efforts. :-) I think it's best if you create a project for your content, that way it's contained. You can always jump out here to the main forums to post something. I've seen a lot of your setting, looking forward to the rules. Can you give us an example of the length of travel between Dromal and say Lagash? Do you use hyperdrive multipliers? |
Deryn_Rys November 3, 2010 - 5:25pm | Actually I'm not trying to make money on my work, I just would like to avoid any legal problems that might stem from distributing artwork that I used (from various gaming resources ), for the sake of filling in blank spaces between text. Otherwise I would have no trouble distributing my work for free to the SF community. That's why I was considering distributing copies by request via E-mail either in Works or Word format, so long as those who wanted it understood that the request would be under the provision that the material was designed for personal use, and was recieved free of charge, with the understanding that any use of the version that they recieved is not to be for profit. If that is considered a good idea (any advice is welcome) then I might just set up a project here. As for the distances in your query...Dromal has coordinates of 7-023.6 (7th sector, 23.6 light years from Prenglar (Frontier center), while Lagash has coordinates of 8-089.7 (8th sector, 89.7 light years from Prenglar) A ship with a Tachyon drive Type B (1ly/day) would make the trip in 76.1 days (subtracting 23.6 light years from 89.7 light years and adding 10 for the 1 sector difference between the two systems). An assault scout however would make the trip in 10.9 days (Tachyon drive I allowing it to travel 7 light years/day). On a related note I should say that calculating a jump to subspace is included in the time it takes for a ship to accelerate to 1% of the speed of light. Most ships accelerate at a speed of 1/2 an AU/ hour multiplied by their engine type's Acceleration/deceleration Stat. Those of us who are mathmeticians can figure out the actual time requirements, but for ease of play I generally say it takes 10+2d5 turns -1 turn/level of the astrogator's skill to prep the ship for a jump which gives enough time for a cinematic chase, before the heroes either jump to subspace and safety, or are captured. Oh and as for the list of worlds above those are only the core worlds there are many more star systems in the central, and outer systems, as well as the Rim Coalition and within that area are at least 3 non-Frontier empires, two trade cartels controlling several systems, and more than a dozen unexplored, or restricted worlds. And beyond that is the area of space known as the Badlands, and the Outer reaches beyond that with even more star systems, and interstellar societies, which insured that Administrator's could develop adventures without stepping on each other's toes because the Frontier is so vast. w00t (not verified) November 4, 2010 - 8:47pm | If you credit the artwork or contact the authors and distribute the PDF for free there should be no issues. That's how we run the magazine and we have not had any issues yet. Most ppl are flattered to be int he magazine. I like your post and the cinematic nature of a chase scene. Do you allow a risk jump if 10 turns is too long? |
Deryn_Rys November 4, 2010 - 9:21pm | Because it's a work in progress I haven't locked it into a PDF file, The rules are still lots of pages of text in a Word, or Works file with artwork clipped into the text (where I'd like it to go if I was ever going to publish it) which is why I'm thinking about just removing the artwork, moving around the text, and distributing it just as Word or Work's documents. This also allows for for new material to just be put into the docs as it becomes available, or rules to easily be amended or expanded opon. As for Risk jumping, If the Astrogator wants to shave off a few rounds by all means, but risk a 5% chance/round under ten that your ship ends up on the other side of the galaxy, or suffer some other horrid fate that the other heroes will never let you live down. Generally I treat each round under ten that the navigator shaves off as a sector that the ship miss jumps to, and then look to see if a star system exists in that sector with coordinates near where they wanted to go, and then let the players figure out where they are. This of course might end up being a great spur of the moment adventure if the players end up deep within one of those hostile Alien Empires because their navigator screwed up. Deryn_Rys November 6, 2010 - 5:35pm | I made an artwork free version of the core rules (with the exception of the cover pic which is the classic Elmore pic from the original SF rules) as a word Doc, and I'll do the same for the Administrator's guide, the Expanded Universe guide, and Knighthawk's guidebook (both these are usable but are still works in progress), and if there is enough of an interest I'll figure out how I can best get copies out to those who want them. I'm still leaning towards sending them out via E-mail (at least at first) rather then put the rules out there for general download because there is still some work to be done (mostly on finishing the Frontier races, vehicles, space craft, mechs and other supplimental materials). I might even do the same for the Animals of the Frontier guidebook and the Rise of the Sathar adventure, so Administrators have something to pit their heroes against. I'll probably start a Project page in the near future to stop cluttering up the board with updates, but since I'm using other people's computers it might take a little time to get things rolling. w00t (not verified) November 6, 2010 - 10:01pm | Email sounds great if you want a select group to critique the work-in-progress. |
Deryn_Rys November 7, 2010 - 9:00am | You are already on my short list to get an advanced copy (I was thinking about sending you one with the art still in it just so you see what I was talking about) "Hey guys I wonder what this does"-Famous last words "Hey guys, I think it's friendly." -Famous last words "You go on ahead, I'll catch up." -Famous last words "Did you here that?" -Famous last words |
Gilbert November 17, 2010 - 6:57pm | oooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhh, nice setup, I am not sure I could of done any better. Do you have a map of them or is this a draw your own map? No offense intended. I like how you have the calculations setup, all neat and very easy to come up with. |
Deryn_Rys November 17, 2010 - 7:52pm | I never wanted to draw an actual map because I could always add star systems easier using coordinates rather then placing them on a map. Not to mention that my Frontier covers about 700 light years from Prenglar to the Rim (not counting the hundreds of light years beyond the Rim that I've got plans for) so making an actual map would be kind of large. Actually the fully detailed Frontier sector covers a sphere 1,192 lightyears from Prenglar to the edge of known space.
