Gargoyle2k7 September 23, 2010 - 12:25am | I'm working on a random name generator for dralasite, vrusk and yazirian names. Its using the Everchanging Book of Names, and I can plug in up to 500 names in a file and have it generate names similar to those I've plugged in. I'd love to use names that the community has for their alien characters (I'm not bothering with humans because, well we all know what human names are). This will be used to generate example names for an article I just finished (save for the examples) for SFman. Thnx! Long live the Frontier! |
w00t (not verified) September 23, 2010 - 6:33am | Before I answer; do we have a "standard" for naming the races? From what I have observed. Dral names have "o" and "b", lots of vowels. Vrusk names have "T", "i", "c" and "k", always i or a for vowels. Yazirians - I have no idea. So... give me some guidelines! :-) |
umungus September 23, 2010 - 9:00am | Kok'ting Gok Mantin Chit'chang Tang'mak Gok At least I got to scare an alien rabbit thingy...... |
TerlObar September 23, 2010 - 10:08am | I use lots of T, K, S, Z and C in my Vrusk names. I'd have to dig some old character sheets out to find examples. Ad Astra Per Ardua! iggy September 23, 2010 - 10:55am | And V and X. with hyphens and apostrophes separating short three letter sounds made with the vowels I, E, and O. I try to talk without my lips or vocal cords and imagine having mandibles and other pincers that I can vibrate, snap, click, and pop while blowing or sucking air past them. -iggy |
w00t (not verified) September 23, 2010 - 11:05am | iggy, send us a video of that action. :-) |
iggy September 23, 2010 - 11:24am | Hey! What we really need to do is get a linguist to create the Vrusk language for us then we could be totally cool like the Trekkies who speak Klingon. We forgot to include whistles in Vrusk names and sounds When I speak Dralasite its all lips and no teeth. For Yazirian I stick to the growling sounds. -iggy |
Gargoyle2k7 September 23, 2010 - 2:01pm | That's a large part of the aricle; what common sounds are in the languages, and thus names. I've so far taken names from all the canon sources I can find, a few from fiction (A. D. Foster's Thranx names are great for vrusk!), and some of my own creations for the EBoN. The article gives suggestions and examples, traditions and conventions, and non-conventional concepts. The article will be a guide to naming, with examples. As to creating languages, I am an amateur linguist, and I'm slowly working on some ideas... :) Long live the Frontier! |
Shadow Shack September 23, 2010 - 3:00pm | Some of my more recent ones are in the Character Generator project here. |
iggy September 23, 2010 - 3:41pm | I wouldn't count myself as a linguist in any degree, but I find languages fun. I know a little Spanish, but not enough to communicate. I was taught a little Afrikaans 30 years ago when my parents took us on a job assignment to South Africa. I speak Bisaya fairly well from my mission in the Philippines. @iggy: you're of a like mind, my friend. I have included those vocal concepts in the article and example names. What would be fun and spice the game up would be to develop some of the common phrases in the different racial tongues. That way there could be the BSG, "frak" and the Mork & Mindy, "shazbot", or, to site the trekkies again, "kapla!". The neat thing is that the Vrusk and Dralasite sounds are realy alien. Humans and Yazirians may not be able to pronounce much of their words. Hence we mammal-ize them and create Pan-Gal. -iggy |
Captain Rags September 24, 2010 - 8:16pm | I find most Vrusk names more than a mouthful most times. Like who (other than the character's creator) would remember a Vrusk character named "Ixxitz Klixxitix Zztixxilzit, esq."? One of my players here named his Vrusk "Ix Nix" (short, vrusk-like, thumbs up), and I have a few NPC Vrusk named "Flynn Zzzzzzzzzt", "Klax Klaxor", and a bartender named "Hoo Too" (probably the sound of a Vrusk just clearing his throat). If Ixxitz Klixxtix Zztixxilzit, esq. was about to get squished by a falling boulder, the last thing he'd hear his friends shout would be, "HEY IXXITZ KLIXXIT..." SPLAT!!! jedion357 September 28, 2010 - 7:00pm | in the lost world game- Ch'k L't but his nick name is Chicklet NPC in White light 2 game - Niss I generally try to do the string of letters that can be turned into a memorable name like Ch'k L't to Chicklet as its easier to remember the nick name. I had to look up Ch'k L't to spell it right :) I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
Gargoyle2k7 September 29, 2010 - 1:06am | Thanks gang for all the vrusk names, but don't forget I'm actually looking for all alien names; vrusk, yazirian and dralasite. Even ifshnit, osakar, humma and mechanon names, even though the article doesn't cover the Rim races. Thanks again for all the feedback. I should have the EBoN chapters done in a few days (so get me those names!), and the article won't take 10 minutes after that! Long live the Frontier! |
w00t (not verified) September 29, 2010 - 10:38am | I'm trying but I think I need to get inspired. I could try a random name gen then modify for SF. Reading puter screen sideways feels funny. Shadow Shack September 29, 2010 - 3:26pm | One of my fave vrusks was an NPC from my Star Fighter Corps game, Skt-Z'otl (call sign: Schitzo). Bill had a fun vrusk he portrayed in my "Basically Speaking" gameroom sessions named Tichat-ka. A vruskan adversary I made for my Raiders of Port Loren revamp (aside from an Expanded Rules rendition of Gramic) is named Kesirmas who pilots a glijet to further harass the party, and another vrusk named Tik-Ket'zil is a crew member of a ship that the party must track down and overtake. My aforementioned vrusks in the Character Gnerator hosted here include my most current PC Dosärmas, along with three others that were generated for other online games: K'ras-Tvil, Velon, and Vroo-Stilla. |
TerlObar September 29, 2010 - 3:48pm | And there was Trabikal and K'narmus from the Dominion Game. Ad Astra Per Ardua! My blog - Expanding Frontier Webmaster - The Star Frontiers Network & this site Founding Editor - The Frontier Explorer Magazine Managing Editor - The Star Frontiersman Magazine |
Shadow Shack September 29, 2010 - 5:08pm | Further proof that I need to get a new PC ASAP (now if someone can remember the vruskan pirate names from my former Pirates of Volturnus SF:0-2 mirror game...) |

jedion357 September 30, 2010 - 4:42pm | Thought just popped- Far side of the moon module has a bunch of vrusk names. had a second idea connected to the pirate Hatzk Nar in the zeb's timeline who is vrusk since I was writing something on him that will turn up in issue 16. Hatzk is his name but Nar is the name of his former conglomerate/trade house. I wrote him as taking his dismantled conglomerate's name as a last name to memorialize it. However I was thinking that most vrusk would do the same take their company's name as a last name. If you like that idea there are a number of trade house names in the module I mentioned above: Rik, Vist'Lat, Clic'Aquat, Sik'Triksta, Ral'Ik'Ka, Gst'Gar'St I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
iggy September 30, 2010 - 4:46pm | Here's one from issue 15, Ki'Kat-Tu Master Vrusk Magician. -iggy |
Gargoyle2k7 September 30, 2010 - 11:16pm | @ jedion: Oh, yeah the various adventures are where I'm getting most of the names for the EBoN books, so the Dark Side of the Moon was invaluable for vrusk. Somehow I'd caught that Hatzk Nar was a yazirian, not vrusk, so I might have to change that. @ iggy: Yep, he's in the book now. :) Long live the Frontier! |
iggy October 2, 2010 - 12:32am | My daughter named her vrusk during the game tonight. A female vrusk environmentalist named Chi'Teh-Tah. She also named her famale yazirian Ashie. -iggy |
Deryn_Rys October 29, 2010 - 1:28pm | My very first Yazirian was named Yamen Growl, and his eldest sun was Gammer Growl. As for Vrusks my favorite was t'kit't'k (Kitkat to his friends), and Allarrummph my Dralasite (Al to his friends) All who were part of a royal marines taskforce. Gargoyle2k7 August 26, 2011 - 10:53am | I did complete the article and submitted (last November) to SFman. I also have written chapters for the Everchanging Book of Names (EBoN) with which I can generate any number of names. I have chapters for drals, vrusk, yazirians, osakar and ifshnit. If anyone is interested, I can send these chapters to you; if you haven't used EBoN, you should. It's a really cool little program, and free (although to unlock some features, he does ask for 10 euros). Here's some sample names: Dralasite: Kloomu, Blimoor, Dooruu, Gaboor, Calbur. Vrusk: Z'keen Kligits, Kril'z-Ra, Chi'kat, Z'kixi. Yazirian: Umani Ratugg, Farzaggan, Nateel, Sa Hradees. Ifshnit: Sutchastith, Ustraa, Kwaaxoo, Haarnt, Taaslien. Osakar: Keastil, Annakair, Uilhi, Hanmar, Ebakemu. I haven't done any work on the Humma, as I despise them, but I could work up a chapter if someone wanted it. Long live the Frontier! |
