Stargate Universe

What do you diehard Stargate fans think of it? I thought it was great. It adds thick drama, but some don't like that. I do. It mixes in some of the plot devices from Battlestar Galactica, but will hopefully follow a different plot line. It's more serious and realistic than the previous Stargate shows without being quite as intense as Battlestar Galactica.

Questions arisen in the show:

Weren't those Goa'uld ships? I thought the Goa'uld were extinct in Stargate canon. Could they have been a a faction that took refuge in some distant part of the Galaxy? Or were those Baal's ships? (I missed a lot of the end of the SG-1 series, but it seemed Baal no longer had his symbiote on the SG-1 episode after the SU premiere. Morena Baccarin: Grrrrowlllll Tongue out)

Who is the spy? Is it the annoying Asian chick? Is it Dr. Rush? Is it the guy in the white shirt? Is there only one spy?

Was Dr. Rush really given charge by O'Neal?

Every episode of every show has its problems. The question is whether the show is good enough to overlook the problems. My issues with that particular episode are fairly light and I like the show:

I knew the second that I saw the father that he was going to die, because that actor makes his money as a "character actor". Character actors are the temps of the acting world. They should have used an unknown actor in that role so that it wouldn't have been so predictable. I like the actor, and he did a great job, but his presence in the role was a dead giveaway (pardon the pun).

Corporal Greer is an ass. There's no way any officer would tolerate his insubordination even in that situation.

I'm worried that Dr.Rush might turn out to be either or both a Laura Roselin and/or Dr. Gaius Baltar. Greer a Starbuck, Lt. Scott an Apollo, and thus Col. Young an Admiral Adama.

There's an extreme lack of color in the show (As was wrong with Stargate Atlantis and Battlestar Galactica). A token black guy and a token Asian chick (Sound familiar?) do not make for racial diversity.

Some cool things that I particularly liked about that episode:

How they introduced us to the ship's layout in the opening, showing us how the various sets come together.

The reveal that the ship they're on actually drops off stargates at each habitable planet it finds.

Eli is cooloer than I thought he would be. Great spontaneous wit.

The hovering probes.

The depth of character inherent in a drama.

Lt. Scott is very principled. He's likely the pure one that's going to be corrupted as the series goes along. He's not greatly dynamic, but I think his corruption will bring out his dynamics.

The deterioration of the ship.

The inclusion of the original SG-1 crew (though minus Teal'c) presented in a more realistic way to help set the tone of the series.

Their naming the new earth defense ship "The Hammond". (Was that introduced in the last season of SG-1?)

Until the show progresses more, I don't have much more to say for now.

The next episode should give us the formula of how planetside adventures are going to go.

I'd like to hear your ideas about how it will progress, what questions you have, and your opinions about the episode?

Nope, the SG:Atlantis series finale "Enemy At the Gates." The producers decided to re-name the Odyssey the George Hammond in honor of the late Don S. Davis(who played Hammond in the originial series).

Also, the Goa'uld are all gone, but the Jaffa(?) Council inherited all their former masters' tech. The Lucian Alliance also uses Goa'uld technology.

Possibly(not having seen SG:U)it could be some other former Goa'uld subjst race utilizing their technology, as their reach throughout the Milky Way Galaxy was quite extensive.

You make me wish I had seen the show. Apparently it replays tomorrow morning @ 8 a.m. CT, so I'll try to catch it then. That being said, I would like to offer a little food for thought as the series progresses.

As far as military personnel go, they are really no different then civies. There are two general types of person who is allowed more slack by superiors, ass-kissers and competents. If Greer is an ass-kisser, he's not likely to be a jerk to his officers, but could be to peers and subordinates. However, if Cpl. Greer is very competent, his officers will give him the leeway to be an ass, even to them. I leave it to you to judge which type Greer is.

Interesting point. He didn't show much competence in this episode, except when he let the congressman pass. We'll see how they develop him.

Oh yeah. I forgot about that. I caught that last movie and I remember their calling it the Hammond.

BTW, Greer's a Master Sergeant, least according to the Wikipedia article(still haven't seen SG:U yet, so it could be different in the televised version). In which case, that's all the reason he needs to be an ass.Laughing

I just watched it. Regardless of Greer's rank, I expect him to be nothing but a jerk. He was in the brig for doing something, and only let out because he was needed. He obviously has a beef with Rush, an unsettled score, but he does still follow orders from Scott and Young - eventually. I can't wait to see the flashback for that story. Still, I'll take Greer over the new BSG's Starbuck any day. I wanted to push her out an airlock halfway through the first season.

Excellent show so far.

It was not a half bad start. I just hope the show can stay with that kind of speed in the story throughout the season. I really hope they expand on the technology.

Oh and the Goa'uld are dead, however they slaves are beginning to create their own governments and whatnot, think of a large power vacuum across the galaxy. If I remeber correctly they made claims that it was the Illution Alliance (check spelling or correct me) which was a sort of drug cartel that stole Goa'uld technology to get their power.

@ ascent, in regards to your comment about lack of color, i doubt that is in anyway intentional on the part of the writers or casting, you dont find many actors from diverse ethnic backgrounds signing up for science fiction television shows. Its a little more common to have a diverse cast in a big budget movie but for some reason television has trouble recruiting ethnically diverse casts to play sci-fi these days. I dont think its a matter of having a token anything I think its a matter of people being afraid of getting type cast.

The Jaffa took over when their masters became extinct; Earth is on good relations with them, at least they were when they took on the (B)Ori.

And, it's Lucian Alliance. They ended up allying with Earth and the Jaffa against the Ori as well.

Yeah I know, but the Stargate writers are notorious for mixing up a storyline even if it contradicts what happened before. I am pretty sure it was the Lucian Alliance because Carter said something about it. From what I understand this series is supposed to be in the middle of the conflict between the Ori and Stargate Atlantis.

My local Family Video kids section has Stargate:Infinity cartoon.
I watched the first episode - liked it.
I'm very curious about the "Ancients".

Ancients: An advanced race who had corporeal form some thousands of years ago, who, before ascending, managed to make a complete hash of things in three galaxies. Now that they are ascended, they still refuse to take responsibility for the mistakes that they made.

Speaking of mistakes, also see Goa'uld, Asurians(Replicators), the Wraith, and, last, and most certainly least, Ori.

After watching episode 2 last night, I like Greer much more - and I still don't know his back story! The episode itself was a little melodramatic for my tastes, but you take what you can get sometimes.

Despite the one redeeming act, he's still severely heavy handed in my eyes. The guy's got problems. Of course you have to have your instigator on the island. He's the Puck of SG:U. Quick on the draw, but slow on the uptake. All pitbull on a chain.

The reason for the melodrama wasn't well explained in that episode until you get to the end and you remember, oh yeah, they were out of oxygen. When you consider that they were trying to save the lives of everyone on board the Destiny with literally moments before people start passing out, then you realize the seriousness; that there was a reason why tensions were running so high.

Next up: Fuel problems.

It should be the same site. According to NetCraft.com, the same company owns both URLs. www2 is probably just a reserve webserver for use during heavy traffic or maintenance.
