Escaping the Serrena Dawn

Finally back in the FTF game saddle again.
My regular D&D group has about an hour to 1.5 hrs to wait for one player to show from dance class so I'm running AD rules Volturnus campaign to pass that time.
we just had our first game after a 2 month hiatus with one member moving and stuff.

It was very gratifying to do 3 combats and a few associated skill test in one hour time when D&D3.5 takes all night for one big combat!

anyhow I expect them to get to the lifeboats in 1-2 weeks and in thinking about that I came up with this:

<!--[if gte mso 9]> Normal 0 MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 <![endif]--><!--[if gte mso 10]> <![endif]-->

Escaping the Serrena Dawn

(do the computer voice in a small soft sweet sounding tone)

*DING* “This is your autopilot speaking, we will be initiating landing procedures in ten minutes, please secure all loose gear and adjust your crash harnesses at this time.”

A few minutes latter the life boat is rocked by and explosion at its rear and atmosphere begins to whistle out of the craft as a pirate shuttle shoots them with a pod laser and roars past.

*DING* “This is your autopilot speaking, rapid atmospheric loss has been detected, all passengers are advised to don emergency vacuum gear.”

(no body has emergency vacuum gear in the party)

A few minutes later:

*DING* “This is your autopilot speaking, computer functions have determined that a crash landing the only option to preserve life functions of biological occupants, we will be landing immediately. All occupants are advised to assume crash positions at this time. Please remember to take all your belongings with you and debark immediately upon landing. A minimum safe distance of 20 meters from the crash site is recommend against the possibility of fuel cell explosion. Thank you for flying with Farway Freight, we hope you have enjoyed your trip.”

Note: the first announcement from the compter is a bit of foreshadowing with the mention of crash harness and the last communication actually communicates the need for the PCs to move 20 meters from the life boat with out the GM having to tell them OOC. I'll just transition to the discription of the crash and build a sense of urgency without explaining any of the details about will happen if they remain too close to the life boat as the autopilot just told them to move off.

I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers!

you should refer to it as a safety harness instead.

LOL yeah, "crash" harness isn't the most politically correct term to foreshadow a disaster.

"Put your crash harnesses on! Fasten your crash helmets, and hang onto the crash bars! We're gonna try not to crash here..."
I'm not overly fond of Zeb's Guide...nor do I have any qualms stating why. Tongue out

LOL you're both right but I find that players often sit and dont react to information given to the by the GM - mostly because they're thinking about it and wondering is that info important or they're still wondering about something from 12 minutes ago or they're just zoning because their last soda/coffee is well past and the sugar/caffene crash has set in.
So I've been putting a little thought into being a little less subtle and a little more provocative with discriptions in game to spark some visible reaction, even if its just a widening of the eyes. Crash harnesses may be just a wee bit to blatant in this case but I think I'll go with it as I plan to move the whole lifeboat and crash scene/ shuttle blowing up pretty fast to give a sense of urgency so there probably wont be enought time for the players to stop play with "Well I guess we're gonna crash." "Yeah thats what I thought." but maybe just time for it to register right before it happens.

Any feed back on things you employ to get a reaction from your players?
