jedion357 February 2, 2009 - 8:56pm | I would think that there would be, among yazerians, several different legal codes- one for civil cases, one for std. criminal cases, and one for clan law. Within clan law there would the the right of trial by combat. the worst Treason against the clan might involve some really gruesome tortuous death. The Guanlet of a 100 Knives- the clan traitor must run a guantlet of 100 clan members with knives if he survives he lives but he becomes clanless. yazerians covered in a multitude of scares and no clan are treated as the absolute scum of the earth by other yazerians though there will be some grudging respect for having run the guantlet nobody really trusts them. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
Gargoyle2k7 February 7, 2009 - 11:29am | With yazirians, I can see a lot of complex legal codes, especially considering religion, honor, tradition and combat of all sorts. I could see legal duels, caste-driven legal codes, and some pretty brutal punishments - lashings, beatings, torture, and painful death. Not to paint the yaz as evil or crude, but they have always seemed kind of brutal to me, and possessing a "might-makes-right" mentality. Long live the Frontier! |
jedion357 February 7, 2009 - 2:39pm | yep I'd add that 4th legal code of religious law for Yast and the Family of One. and since I'm toying with a civil war campaign where the daughter yazerian colonies revolt against the oppressive religious orthodoxy of the religion controlled parent planet I would write some conflict in between clan law and religious law so that there is a tradition of the more traditional clansmen bucking the religious law if they can get away with it (which usually only happens off Yast or in secret on Yast). I also view the Family of One as being much like the Roman Catholic church but with the Jessuits in charge and since the "Clan Renegade" back ground that I included in my Port Loren Public Library project has the Family of One disbanning and hunting down Clan Renegade I've styled them after the Templars though without the secret treasure myth and such but since a popular templar myth is that the Masons are the modern day inheritors of the templar legacy and treasures I could see doing the same with Clan Renegade that the surviving members went underground and have formed a new cadre that has a stated "blood enemy" of the family of one though the cadre has a front organization that publicly supports the church. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
Imperial Lord February 8, 2009 - 7:58pm | I largely agree with Gargoyle here, but I think contact with the other Races would have blunted the rough edges of the Yazirians a great deal. Clan Law would be a whole end of itself. Multiple layers of law intertwining with Clan Law. This could be quite a confusing legal situation. Duelling would be a very special circumstance. After all, you can't have half of the elites of your society killing the other half! That's why duelling was banned around the world here on earth. I imagine the same conclusion being reached by the Yazirians. Certainly worthy of discussion and exploration. There is no doubt that Yazirian justice would be the most complex of all of the core Four Races. |
Imperial Lord May 9, 2009 - 1:23pm | Common Law would also be very important to Yazirians. Tradition = precedent, and the Yazirians are very passionate about their traditions. As a result, common law, with its almost complete reliance on precedents, would be a good match for them. In terms of jedion's scenario - sounds like an excellent storyline for an adventure! I like the Templar angle - done right, it could be very cool. You should require at least 1 Yazirian in the PC party - preferably as many as possible and see how they roleplay the situation. Maybe do it with an all Yazirian party? That might be even better. Let me know if you put it together - I would be happy to play a PC Yazirian in that kind of campaign. These are the kinds of campaign ideas I like best - ones that explore the Frontier planets themselves. |
jedion357 June 4, 2013 - 8:23pm | Council of Clans came out of fan cannon and is the governing body for both Yast and Exib I can see it as a very ancient practice, where regional clans came together to discuss and rule on issues of inter clan relations. After the Star Exoudus the old practice quickly evolved on Yast and Exib was a more formal governing system for this colony and its moon. Council of Clans is a sort of combined judiciary and assembly regionally 3 clans have leaders serve as a Lower court for dealing with crime and civil law cases thought there is an appeal system that kicks the case higher. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
