Fu-Man_Chu December 15, 2007 - 11:08pm | Hi guys - I had an unexpected quiet day today when both my Hackmaster game was cancelled as well as another get-together with a friend was cancelled. So, I decided to look into the SF projects going on and finally post my House Rules into the House Rules Wiki project. As it says there, I'm a fan of the original AD rules but wanted to incorporate some of the ZG material, so I used Star Frontiers 2000 as my source. I've put up the skeleton of the changes I've made for an uncoming campaign (probably start next summer after Living Greyhawk is cancelled and they roll out D&D4... I'm not sure I'm going to jump in till I see it for a while...) In any case, I'd love to hear any of your feedback! for ease, here's the direct link: http://starfrontiers.us/node/2271 -Andrew |
w00t (not verified) December 16, 2007 - 5:00pm | Interesting read. A little complex for my gaming desires. I like the Hit Location. :-) |
jaguar451 December 16, 2007 - 7:06pm | I'm not familiar with the 2k rules, so don't have much background for comment... What jumps out at me: * Instead of hit location, would adding a d10 to the DMG achieve much the same impact & be faster? Similar to what we've been doing in the Basic Rules revisited project.... http://starfrontiers.us/node/2168 Although I understand a lot like more detailed DMG rules, and I don't have any direct experience with any of them (heck, I only re-started playing SF about a month or so ago....) * "Roll additional dice of damage equal to tens digit of to hit roll." Simple, but seems a little backward -- the closer one comes to missing, the more DMG one does.... A little more work, but something along the lines of "Roll additional dice of damage for each 10 points of difference between the to hit roll and what is required in order to hit." For example, if one needed a 40 to hit, and rolled between 21 and 30, would do an extra d10. If roll 11 to 20, and extra 2d10. * Keeping track of wounds by area seems like it could be a lot of work to keep track of.... And with the hit location, if you can only hit on 0-9, every hit is a head shot... * Not being experienced with 2k rules, some of the skill breakdowns seem quite granular (pistol vs rifle, for example, jump out.) * Have you looked at the 25th Aniversary Edition rules? In the forum discussion, and in the rules, there are some proposed skillsets for conversion of AD characters that seem pretty good. Esp for the Enforcer, seems a little too weapon focused. Skill groupings at http://starfrontiers.us/node/1167, some discussion on it at http://starfrontiers.us/node/2230 * Especially for online play, I like point buy for ability points. * I like the background traits / extra starting Skills for smart folks. * I like the concept of 0th level in PSA skills -- although would have to think about it..... I could see for generic skills, although for specialized skills.... Again, soemthing to think about... |
Kevin December 18, 2007 - 7:29am | I like your age rules for character generation - gives age a purpose! |
Corjay (not verified) December 18, 2007 - 7:43am | Point buy systems seems to be the wave of the future. Rumor has it that D&D 4e is going to point buy. You may be on the right track. I haven't looked closely at your stuff just yet, but I am interested. |
jaguar451 December 18, 2007 - 10:05am | Point buy -- FWIW, I got used to it from playing Neverwinter Nights, which is based on D&D 3.0.... |
Fu-Man_Chu December 18, 2007 - 4:26pm | Thanks for your replies guys! I'm glad for other SF fans to take a peek at what I've been doing... As for jaguar's comments, let me see if I can explain what I'm trying to accomplish and why I did it that way... What jumps out at me: * Instead of hit location, would adding a d10 to the DMG achieve much the same impact & be faster? - Yup, I thought about that, but I absolutely LOVED the old TopSecret/SI hit location system and thought it would be fun to add as a "realistic" component to SF. * "Roll additional dice of damage equal to tens digit of to hit roll." Simple, but seems a little backward -- - Yeah, I thought about doing it the reverse way too, but it leaned towards bogging things down rather than simply grabing the extra number of dice indicated. I guess I see the percentage as simply a probability to hit and not actually representative of how close the shot got to the target... and from that perspective, it doesn't matter which way one counts 8-) * Keeping track of wounds by area seems like it could be a lot of work to keep track of.... And with the hit location, if you can only hit on 0-9, every hit is a head shot... - Yup, and not sure how to simplify the wound rules... but I left it in for those climactic battles with the bad guys!... And for the hit location, the ONES digit determines where the shot went - so if only hit on 01-09, then no bonus damage, but can hit anywhere... * Not being experienced with 2k rules, some of the skill breakdowns seem quite granular (pistol vs rifle, for example, jump out.) -Actually, the skill breakdowns were mostly mine and are pretty arbitrary 8-) * Have you looked at the 25th Aniversary Edition rules? In the forum discussion, and in the rules, there are some proposed skillsets for conversion of AD characters that seem pretty good. Esp for the Enforcer, seems a little too weapon focused. Skill groupings at http://starfrontiers.us/node/1167, some discussion on it at http://starfrontiers.us/node/2230 -Sweet! Thanks! * Especially for online play, I like point buy for ability points. -Yup, point buy for abilities are nice to keep everything standard (plus, I've noticed that that tends to draw players more into the game and keep them invested as they plot out all the various iterations of the character...). I guess I'm old-school in liking randomness to that, hehehe. * I like the background traits / extra starting Skills for smart folks. -Thanks! Seem reasonable to me... * I like the concept of 0th level in PSA skills -- although would have to think about it..... I could see for generic skills, although for specialized skills.... Again, soemthing to think about... -Yeah, I was trying to keep things kinda loose. -Andrew |
