Doc Fishbone December 12, 2007 - 6:07am | I found a guy on e-bay who bought out a warehouse and had around 30 boxes of SF minis from 1983. I bought several. he is listing them on e-bay. I have asked him for an itemized list and when I get it I will post it here. Here is a link to the e-bay site. I think he only has two on thier right now but at 8.00 a box I thought it was reasonable. http://stores.ebay.com/The-Lotus-Guardian_Other_W0QQcolZ2QQdirZQ2d1QQfsubZ1QQftidZ2QQtZkm Doc Mess with the fish....you get the bone!!! |
Full Bleed December 12, 2007 - 10:25am | On the 7th I bought a Spacefarers set from the same seller since that was the only box set I didn't have. I haven't received it yet though. I'm seeing $4.99 + $7 shipping for what he has listed though (which is what I paid last week too.) I just need a couple blister packs now to finish up my collection. |

beowulf December 12, 2007 - 2:11pm | Be careful. Some of those old SF minis have corrosion, which can occur inside a sealed box. You should get a picture of the actual minis before buying. |
Sargonarhes December 12, 2007 - 5:48pm | Yes, lead rot can ruin a good deal. Some dealers will not open the box to check for it, thinking the sealed box is more important than the contents of the box. In every age, in every place, the deeds of men remain the same. |
Corjay (not verified) December 12, 2007 - 9:59pm | You can always request that the dealer check the contents before shipping, giving him clear permission to open the packages before sending. |
Full Bleed December 13, 2007 - 12:28am | I've read about "lead rot" on a number of sites... but I probably have 30 or so boxes of various miniatures and hundreds of other singles from the early 80's and I've never seen it personally. I've taken no special steps to store anything either. Now, I suppose it's true that none of my stuff has been stored in a warehouse with massive temperature fluctations or high humidity though so maybe my stuff is just low risk. I will, however, report on my experience with this person's merchandise when I receive my box. |
Full Bleed December 18, 2007 - 12:38am | Well, I just got my box today and at least half of the minis do have a certain amount of "lead rot." I have to surmise that it has everything to do with storage conditions and the particular balance of metals in the figs. Some are in perfect condition (they tend to be the shinier ones) while others are covered with a grayish coating with what looks like bulbous, barnacle-like growths. I think that I may be able to take a toothbrush to the affected minis and salvage them for the most part. Guess I'll have to look into what I can do to protect them. |
Sargonarhes December 21, 2007 - 6:02pm | That's a shame, if I had the time and skills for it. I'd like to figure a way to make new minies for SF. 25mm humans aren't a problem as you can get a huge variety of them from GZG (Ground Zero Games) both civies and soldiers including powered armor. The ships would be a project however. In every age, in every place, the deeds of men remain the same. |
Gilbert December 21, 2007 - 9:48pm | Making miniatures isn't that hard. It's what you want to make out of them. |
w00t (not verified) January 3, 2008 - 10:14am | mine are on the way! it sure would be nice if someone out there would do a write-up on "how to make your own SF minis" or "how to paint SF minis". :-) |
GJD January 3, 2008 - 12:19pm | The "lead rot" is apparently due to the mix of metals used in some early 80's minis. TSR and Ral Patha were especially prone to it. It's a chemical reaction within the metal, so whilst you might be able to cleam off the surface stuff, the recation will continue. Eventually the mini will crumble and break. There is anecdotal evidence, and I'm pretty sure that it isn't true, that "the rot" can be tramsmitted to other miniatures with the same metal mix. I'm dubious, considering it is a chemical reaction, but if you have any precious minis from that era - keep them seperate just to be sure. G. |
w00t (not verified) January 3, 2008 - 2:05pm | this article seems to have a way to "fix" the lead rot and encase the mini so it won't continue. |
