I thought this was fun.

It brought back some memories.

Is it just me, or does this guy kinda look like The Grinch in a really bad horror flick? Surprised

The lizard man of the arena is most definitely the cheesiest.

That's what a dralasite looks like when transported with a defective bap bin :D

This article was largely in response to the new HD release of The Original Series.  What I didn't know for sure was that not only is this version remastered, it's had some CGI updates.  I always thought that would be a great idea.

Here is a good article with video clips and comparison shots.

I'm actually not sure I'm sold on what they did.  Some of it looks washed out and too neutral.  The ships could have been made more realistic... it kind of looks like older CGI.  The problem is that, just as I could tell the older version was a model, I can tell the new version is CGI.  It's just one flaw traded for another.

I'll have to see these on an HDTV to get a good feel for it one way or another though.

I'm not sure I like the faded look. And with all the work they did, they couldn't add in CG computer screens?

Well, I've checked out the HD version of the first episode and I'm happy to say that it wasn't faded at all. Not sure what's up with that site's capture software. In fact, it was kind of eye-opening to see such a vivid HD version.

A lot of the "viewscreens" in the episodes I've seen bits and pieces of have been CGI'd... but I'm still trying to figure out if they didn't go more "real" looking because they were afraid it wouldn't fit well with the rest of the show... or if they just did it all on a shoe-string budget and we're looking at "cheaper" CGI that they could have produced.

I will say that after watching the first episode, the new stuff is rather seamless and not at all out-of place.  It really does not stand-out very much at all.  So, if that's what they were shooting for, I think they succeeded.  But I'm still not sure that spending the time and effort to produce an effect that doesn't really stand out makes much sense.

I gotta say, considering what Star Trek had to work with in the 60's, these critters were not that bad.

It took me YEARS to figure this out, but I finally did: you can't watch Star Trek for the special effects.  If you do, you will dismiss the show as cheese, like I did for over two decades.  You watch for Kirk and McCoy's overacting, Kirk scoring all the time with the chicks (a refreshing change from the PC Bolshevism we have today), and the Kirk-Fu with that hilarious music.  Fun to watch Scotty freak out and the red guys get whacked too.

I also find Spock's arguments with an overacting McCoy entertaining.  Plus all of their eyebrows going halfway up their heads all the time is funny.  Then you have the girls in the crew dressed in those little tunics with those black boots (schwing! tent pole!)  I pray daily for the fashion cycle to bring that back.

I propose to gather the cheese from the other shows - which is retardedly voluminous.  Put some crap on their face and you have an alien?  Re-treads from Benson? Then again, I never really watched Voyager or Enterprise so I don't even know the depths to which they sank.  I only saw a handful of Deep Space 9s...  Just giant buckets of cheese.

Oh, and one more thing - the CGI thing is totally unnecessary.  In fact, I PREFER the 60's special effects, just as nature intended.  Give me the 100% real deal, as aired, commercial free.  That's good TV.

I'd actually love to watch the first-run "commercials included" versions from the 60's.

Not so much interested in commercials today, but as a contextual element that helps set the show in its cultural timeline, seeing the original commercials would be awesome.

As for successive Treks... It took me awhile to watch TNG.  A lot of it I didn't like (though there are characters I liked, like Picard.)  DS9 took the "Trek" out of Star Trek.  Only saw a few episodes and it was "ok."  Voyager, seemed good from what I saw, but I need to watch it from the beginning.  And as for "Enterprise", I actually thought it was really good.  A departure from the recent efforts (certainly more angry) and perhaps a bit too obsessed with time-travel, but still a show I enjoyed.

And while the CGI may be largely unnecessary, the remastered/HD part of the new releases are nice.  In some ways, there is more on the screen to appreciate than the low-def versions captured.  Maybe it doesn't quite feel like sitting in front of a 14" TV and having to adjust the rabbit ears to get a pretty clear picture before the show starts, but as a translation to today's viewing experience... I think it holds up.

Hey! I liked the gorn! And I am not a trekkie by any stretch of the mean!

Although that horta thing was pretty bad, admittedly.

I thought the silliest one was the floating giant space dunce cap that ate space ships....
