Enhancement: Ability to mark selected threads as 'read'

    Issue Number:
    156
    Severity:
    Minor
    Description:
There is a 'Mark all Option' on the what's new page.

It would be nice to be able to mark specific threads as read without having to either read it or mark ALL threads as read.

I would also still like a "mark all as read" option on the front page for the news, rather than having to go into "What's New" to do it, along with this excellent idea.

jaguar451 - How do you propose that you mark specific threads as read?  And do you mean putting it in a state of permanently-marked-as-read?  Or do you mean somehow selecting individual threads with a checkbox or something, then clicking a button to "Mark selected as read"?

Corvus - Don't you go to What's New already anyway to see what's new in the projects to which you're subscribed?  I suppose a "Mark as read" on general content could be placed somewhere on the front page... but so far the front page is informative, not a control-form.  I guess a "Mark as read" somewhere wouldn't be too much of an eye-sore.

    Let me know please :)

I wasn't thinking of permanently read (interesting idea, though) -- mainly, if I like half the topics, but don't have time to read them all, I can keep the ones I like on the 'new' page, but get rid of the ones I don't.

My original thought was a button in the list that just said 'Read', although the check-box idea would be more efficient. Could have a 'Select All' and rename 'Mark All Read' to 'Mark Selected Read' or something like that....

I think jaguar means the use of check boxes. You check the messages you want to remove from the "What's New" list, because he may want to take some off the list that he has no interest in reading (declaring it "mark as read"), while leaving others from the same group as unread until he has time to get to them.

It's not very useful for me, but it might be to someone else.

As I said before, anywhere you have a "new" mark, you need the ability to remove those marks in that location.  Forcing the user to go through additional clicks to get to that control is the opposite of user-friendly.  I don't always go to "What's New" because I don't always feel like it when I check the page.  I'm not always here to check the projects, especially when I'm not actively contributing to them.  I often just check the Newest Topics list and if there are none that interest me I want the ability to clear the annoying red tags without having to go through another page.  Combining it with the by-selection / checkbox method would be prime.
