Imperial Lord October 27, 2007 - 2:53am | Or can I make a mirror of it here? Can we also have the games advertised on everyone's log-in screen every time they come to the site? Nothing too annoying, but I think we need to get people in the site playing ASAP, rather than writing rules and dreaming up new equipment, skills, races, etc... |
Corjay (not verified) October 27, 2007 - 3:47am | Absolutely. You might put that advertising idea in the Support Issues for the site so that Bill can address it in time. I've noticed that starfrontiers.org is dying quickly (very infrequent posting), while this site sees steady use daily despite few peaple knowing about it and will undoubtedly grow substantially in the next few months. |
Shadow Shack October 27, 2007 - 4:17am | Go for it, that's the nature of this project: get as many online games listed in one place. I think Woot also mentioned adding a link to the main links page as another option too (I need to get that done with my games...gotta whip up some cool logos first LOL) |
w00t (not verified) October 28, 2007 - 5:43pm | I agree with the posting on the front page. PPL love reading and creating but playing seems the most fun cause you get to put it all together. can we swap back and forth? a poll then a game, after a refresh like the main header logo? |
CleanCutRogue October 28, 2007 - 6:03pm | If you make a project called "Outer Reach Online Play" or similar... you can turn off "Documents" and "Downloads" (by making them manager-only can view), and the forum can be for the game thread. Players could use the online character generator to make their characters. Of course, whenever new content is added to the forums, it will show up in the "What's New" section of the site. That way they won't miss it. I'm generally opposed to giving any front-page advertisement to a project. That's been asked about before and I'm not a huge fan of it... Are you saying you'd want to advertise for new players that way? Or are you saying you want to have your game's progress sticky on the front page for everyone who's playing the game to see? Or everyone to see? Explain to me and I might not be too opposed.... 3. We wear sungoggles during the day. Not because the sun affects our

Shadow Shack October 29, 2007 - 2:47am | How do you sticky a thread in the forum? Are you saying you'd want to advertise for new players that way? Or are you saying you want to have your game's progress sticky on the front page for everyone who's playing the game to see? Or everyone to see? I'd say all of the above, at least as applied to the links page |
CleanCutRogue October 30, 2007 - 11:13am | Currently only a site ref (um... me lol) can make it sticky, though I could code allowing project managers that right. But then it would simply be sticky in the forums specific to that project. Is that what we want? The "What's New" link (everyone's using that handy lil page, right?) gives you all new stuff in all projects you're a member of (or manage)... isn't that enough to alert folks that there's been a post in their play-by-post? Here's another idea, using the tools I have already provided... Instead of one project for lots of play-by-post games.... let's say I want to run a game. I'll call it "Dramune Run". Setting up the Game I create a project and call it "Dramune Run". I make everything managed/manager-only. The front page I'd make an advertisement for players (remember, managers can type anything they want in the front page), along with an intro and guidelines to get them started. Since everyone on the site gets a PM when a new project is begun - people will come to the front page to see what it's all about, some people will be interested and request membership. I'll reply with an "accept" or "decline" (roster is full - sorry!) and when the roster is full of players I'll change membership from Managed to Closed. Now I'd have the players generate their characters to my specifications for the game (I'd use the system here) and I'd put references to these characters in the project's Documents - just for easy reference and so viewers of the project can easily see a Cast of Characters. I'd also put maps, handouts, and other images there, to be a repository of all referencable stuff. Game Play Now we'd play in the forums. Normally this would be done in a single thread in that forum. We'll call that thread topic "Game Play". Every time I post (as Referee), I'd then go to the Members tab and send a [Dramune Run] Project Announcement (all project manager have this ability) to all the players (who incidentally are all the project's members), informing them that I've posted narration in the game play forum, and they need to come respond/post. Players will receive the PM and come post. Remember - in your profile, you have the ability to request an email notification every time you get a PM if you'd like. Repeat as necessary until all the characters are dead haha. Anyway - that's how I'd run a play-by-post. I don't think the Support Issues or Downloads would be necessary, but a play-by-post Project uses most of the rest of the utilities available to the site :-) Doesn't this sound sufficient? 3. So you want a Project for every single Play by Post game? I would consolodate...but only Managers can send announcements. ..but it would work becuase players come to the site offten and click What New Home Slice! also...I don't like the idea of closing the project...it should be open so we can all read and enjoy. IMHO / YMMV |
Shadow Shack October 30, 2007 - 4:26pm | Hmm, I think making a new project for each game is a bit tedious, as far as navigation goes anywyas. Seems if there's going to be an online game project, that would be the host for all such games if they were to be portrayed here on this server (as opposed to outside php forums and such). Simply start up a new document and branch off all the sub-sections from there, and the game can be played via the discussion options off the document page as was discussed earlier. My 2¢ |
CleanCutRogue October 30, 2007 - 5:27pm | well alright - I didn't think there would be an influx of 100+ online games going haha... Do you think there are enough tools to do what you need with what is provided already? Or is there a feature or two that would be mandatory for accommodating online games in the way you imagine? 3. Corjay (not verified) October 30, 2007 - 5:55pm | Being able to sticky a post within a project's forum would be nice to have. Stickies are good for keeping important information in view. |
Shadow Shack October 31, 2007 - 11:57am | Well we already have the PM capacity here, so the sticky feature is about the only other thing I'd say would be needed. New topics aren't an issue, as they can be tree-branched in the document section as they arise, re: "Part 2" can be spliced in as a new section rather than continue off the original thread. Oh, one other possible issue...a pbp game can get rather post heavy. One thing I've been noticing lately on the multiple-page topics is after making a post here, I'll get redirected back to the first post each time. I don't know if it's just me or if it's happening to everyone. |

Corjay (not verified) October 31, 2007 - 1:48pm | Oh, grr. I still need to go to the doctor to grow that new brain I've been wanting. Okay, actually, it's on this page. Right below the first post, just change the option from "Oldest First" to "Newest First". |
CleanCutRogue October 31, 2007 - 2:32pm | Yeah - that's an annoying lil bug in Drupal Forums - there's no fix for it currently and I can't figure one out. But a work-around is to view newest-to-oldest... just as Corjay said. 3. We wear sungoggles during the day. Not because the sun affects our
