    Please Move Project Membership Button

    Issue Number:
    112
    Severity:
    Minor
    Description:
The project membership button is on the members page. This is not intuitive. I had problems finding it the first time I tried to find it and others are also having trouble. I suggest moving the "Request Membership" button from the Members page to the Front page of projects, maybe even putting it in the project descriptor.

I second this one, it should be in one of the two locations Corjay suggested.

wow if you two agree on something then it must be true haha....

I agree, and have thought about this as well.  I will leave it there, but will make an additional button on the front page of each project when it's viewed alone (not in the massive lists of projects, just when you go to that project).

Why leave it on the Members page, though?

a few reasons.  1) code is already written why delete it.  2) project managers have a lot of other membership-related rights in the member page.  It's generally where someone can kick someone from a project (or even ban them) and send announcements to all members.  Site Referees have other rights.  It makes sense in all those situations.

Besides, what's the harm in having it in more than one place? :-)

I think the word I'm looking for is "elegance".  It's like feeding chicken soup to a dead guy -- what's it gonna hurt?  Not much, but it's still a silly thing to do.

I don't have a problem with keeping a copy of the button on the Members page as long as there's one in a much more obvious place.

So long as the button is on the front page, yeah, it doesn't really do much harm.  Bill could install a Request Membership button in his bathroom for all I care.  Laughing  I just think it's more elegant to remove the one from the Members list, as that's not where people are going to think to look for a button to join the project.

I put the button controls on the project's front page.  If you're not a member, you get the "Request Membership" - if you are a member you see a button to "cancel membership."

Do ya really think it in-elegant to have versitile options?  I can remove it from the membership tab... I don't really have a problem with that.  I just thought it made sense when grouped with all the other options there for membership cancellations and banning and annoucements.  So what do you all think?  Membership page having the button too is bad?

d00d, if your project is in the restroom....I don't want a membership.

I can see your point, Corvus, and I'll remove it from the members page.  I guess what I meant for that page was a Membership page, not just a list of Members... I guess I titled it improperly and didn't think it through clearly.  Consider it gone :-)

Project Managers will still use that page, however, to cancel or ban members or to send site announcements.

Well, it was more Corjay's point and I was just backing him on the play.  It only occurs to me now, of course, that the best reason not to have one on that tab is that the person who's going to be using the options on that tab isn't going to need to request membership in the first place.  *snicker*  But yeah, when you're done installing the coffee maker in the laundry room, I need to talk to you about the DVD player in my closet... (I kid because I care, naturally.)  Anyway, looks great now!
