w00t (not verified) September 18, 2007 - 8:42am | also, in my Buddy list can I get a chat indicator along with who's online? obviously the logic should be ONE circle, if their in chat it's assumed there online |
Corjay (not verified) September 18, 2007 - 8:50am | I'm confused. Either I'm not understanding your request or you don't see the online and chat indicators. If it's that you just want dynamic indicators, then Bill has already shot that down. Dynamic indicators would be an enormous strain on the site once it gets busy. Not like the PM indicators, which themselves already pull a load apparently. |

The buddy list already shows orange for online and green for chat. I decided not to make them dynamically load for the following reason... right now, I update the "My Messages" link only once per 10 minutes. If someone has four-five windows/tabs open (very common for a decent browsing experience for a busy person) then that's like one dynamic update every other minute. Even if I get 60 users online at one time, that load isn't too great to handle. To make the dynamic updates of the chat/online/offline indicators effective, you'd have to update them once per 10 seconds or so. Otherwise your update might be less accurate than the rate at which the server knows of the chat/online status. I could make them dynamic every 10 minutes like I do the My Messages blocks.... That wouldn't give you high-speed accuracy, but if you leave your window open all day in the background then when you click the tab the info won't be 4 hours old :-) Would that be ok? 3.
