New SF fan, any newbie friendly games out there?

I'm in mid 40's, serious tabletop/mini wargamer and BIG fan of old school publishers - TSR, GDW, Fasa, Task Force, etc. SF was a recent discovery, hits all the right spots, I want in! Anyone running a game and is willing to introduce new player to the game? I'm good for forum, email, roll20, google hangouts, any other format play. I have busy fam life, but most nights after 7:30pm EST are open with prior notice. I have PDFs and hard copies of core books. Unless I'm doing something wrong, seems that most games on this site are now few years old. Is there another online SF hangout?

Welcome to the Frontier Ig.

I saw you in the Who's on line and thought you were Iggy for some reason.

Try starfrontiers.com they are hosting scans of the original books not digital remasters (different fan license)

look for Star Frontiersman magazine: http://starfrontiersman.com/

and Frontier Explorer magazine: http://frontierexplorer.org/

Newly started game at yahoo groups is Star Frotniers setting but D20 rules (I dont like d20 so I'm just a lurker)
https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/frontierfreelancer/info

This is the only active game I'm aware of.

if you have not discovered the magazines yet your in for a real treat as there are years of fan produced material there. All sorts of sci-fi goodness to keep you busy.
I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers!

You'll want to explore this site and join some of the projects that interest you. clicking the what's new button wont show you whats new in a project unless you are a member. Although, open projects will allow you to visit and some have permission setting that might even allow you to post or upload without membership.

And of course you are more than welcome to get involved with the magazines, submitting material or art.

I'm actually looking to start up a new game later in the month.  The current plan is 2nd and 4th Fridays starting at 8pm MDT.  The only problem is that I already have 13 volunteers for players.  I can add you to list but player selection will be by lottery with everyone else going on a wait list to take the place of people that have to drop out.  Beyond that, and the game that jedion357 mentioned, there is a game being started up by Shane Winter (hit him up in the Star Frontiers community on Google+ if he doesn't see this here.  He's sevanwint here).  He invited me to play but with starting my game I don't have time.  He might still have openings.  Beyond that, I don't know of any currently running.

Thanks for the links, I'll definitelly check them out.

Beggars cant be choosers but I'm mostly interested to play the original AD basic rules or slightly modified.

If you have any links to podcasts or blogs to clssic SF sesions, I would greatly appreciate.

TerlObar,

Are you planning on using base AD rules or somethign more advanced? Voice/video or forum play? Since waiting line for your game is so long, any chance you will allow lurkers or perhaps you would consider posting a blog/podcast?

Thanks

Interested. I have another potential player to join us as well. We are both available most evening after 8pm EST. I would prefer basic or advanced  Alpha Dawn rules since this would be the first time playing SF.

Actually, I'm planning on putting the sessions up as a podcast and if everything works out right, will be live-streaming them on twitch.tv (channel is StarFrontiersRPG).  I probably won't allow lurkers in the actual Roll20 game but people can follow along on the side channels.
