New strategy for creating alien races

Its probably not that new: find a miniature (preferably from a broad line- to give you many choices) being manufactured now that looks like a cool alien and work up some statistics for it then use it in your game.

For instance I found these:http:
http://www.rackham-store.com/boutique_us/liste_produits.cfm?type=838&code_lg=lg_us&num=48&pag=2
on sale half price and picked them up to use as Gorlians from the SFzine (admittedly its just matching an existing race to a miniature)

Recently I went to check out hassel frees new miniatures as I hadn't been to their site in a while and wow
a lot of new stuff.

heres some stuff from hassel free I'm considering using:
http://hasslefreeminiatures.co.uk/pack.php?pack=951

one of my favorites:
http://hasslefreeminiatures.co.uk/pack.php?pack=756

pluss the whole new twilight line would make a nice back drop for a primitive race
Heres the race:
http://hasslefreeminiatures.co.uk/range.php?range_id=64&subcat_id=71
heres some of the stuff to encounter on the above race's planet
http://hasslefreeminiatures.co.uk/range.php?range_id=64&subcat_id=72

not supper creative but effective enough

post links for your own idea so we all can steal them.
I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers!

I love that Mawe!
We should make up some stats for it.
Seems to me it would detect prey using sonar, heat or vibration.

Good stuff Jedi - even if ppl don't like mini's they are great for inspiration.

Actually I was thinking to use the mawe for the dangerous beast alluded to in the polygon encounter detailing the archaeologist meeting an Ul-mor on Laco. Just be cause I was working at developing some of the ideas for the tetrarchs and the mega corp Laco's war.

I really like the Devanu, actually.

They strike me as super fast runners - even faster than Vrusk.  They are not very smart, strong, and have shy personalities, whose natural fear makes social situations awkward.

Perhaps the Devanu had many centuries contending with huge predatory wildlife.  Because of this their "flight" reflex is greater than most, and the Devanu are constantly in a nervous state, at least.  Of course, the Devanu overcame these challenges with technology and tenacity, but they still had to struggle with large dinosaur-like predators.  At a few points in their history, they were on the brink of being obliterated by these beasts.

Just a start...

For the mawe I would make them a large carnivore based off the size compared to other minis.
Since their most distinguishing feature is that mouth I'd give it a huge amount of damage maybe comparible to a sonic sword in damage.
Based off the 3 poses of the mini: leaping, roaring, crouching; I'd say this creature is a stalking hunter who attacks from ambush when possible and usually a loner unless a mated pair. For movement he's a sprinter and a leaper but cant sustain a long pursuit.
His sense of smell is through his mouth- he opens his mouth and makes a chuffing noise while doing short intakes of air to taste the molecules in the air. His sense of smell is as acute if not more so than a blood hound, hearing is on par with humans, sight? I dont see eyes on the mini.
Of course we could dump everything I just wrote in favor of an eco locator since he doesn't have eyes. which would probably mean no stalk and hide or ambush attack but more of a relentless driving stalk with the final attack when the prey is pursued to exhaustion.
either way I'd make him the vulture of the waste land finding and devouring carrion as well as fresh kills.

I was just skimming the Games Workshop web site for idea and came across the Kroots, Kroot hounds, and Krootox in the 40K listing for the Tau army and if you could pick these up cheap they have a lot of potential. Just the Kroot hounds would be worth having for a large carnivore

also a bit off topic to the thread title but these would work for zurraqor alien allies to the sathar:

I suppose the strategy I suggested is summed up "steal form other peoples work"

to that end I offer this:
http://www.warrenfahy.com/page_gallery.html

its the original concept gallery produced by the author of a new book that is best described as Jurrasic Park meets King Kong meets crashed WW2 Japanese aviator meets throw backs to the Cambian era.

The review I read trash the book for its writing and the plot being a mess but said the very best part, if the only good part, was exploring this cambrian evolved world.

I cant speak on the novel, having not read it but the art gallery is great fodder for new creatures
enjoy

For assistance with creating creatures check out my design document.

Its should be straight forward to convert the stats to Alpha Dawn.

What is the difference between that and the Alpha Dawn creature creation rules?

It has similarities but is quite different.
You can do a diff.

The next version will have tables and a complete subsystem to generate creature stats. :-)

In the Old Dragon MAgazine they had a alient creation system, or traveller I believe, but IIRC could be used to create aliens
