My Son (Zack) and I recently played a Knight Hawks battle with miniatures. We used rulers and protractors for movement. I have never played the game like that before. It was a lot of fun. Here are a few pics.

Zack is working all the angles.
Notice the "space smoke" as we jockingly call it. We put cotton on the ships that were badly damaged. Represents fires and escaping gases.

My UPF ships. With a scratch built Agriculture ship.

Hey, you gotta tells us how you scratch built the Ag ship.

That is a good idea, using the cotton for masking screens. Didn't think of that.

The Ag ship idea started from those wiggle eyes that they have at the craft store.
I thought if I got some big ones they would make good domes. So, I cut the bottom off and painted some crops on a piece of paper (One is like a park with a pond) and glued the domes on top. Well, I had domes but no ship.

I used a bamboo skewer for the main body. I tried to make a 3 sides gantry type truss work for the main shaft. That turned into a miniature mess in a hurry. hehehe

The ion engines are coffee stir sticks with vey small wiggle syes on the front and the end cones of  mechanical pencils in the back. They are glued to two beads that are slipped over the skewer.

The forward pilot section is two end cones from mechanical pencils glued together.

after that I just glued on random pieces of paper, balsa wood, small and medium wiggle eyes and pencil lead to make it look more complicated.

Does the AG ship look as fantastic as it does in those photos? The photos aren't super crisp, so I can't see the detail. But that's awesome.

Hey thanks Ascent!

I think it looks better in person. The pictures kept looking all blown out from the flash. Pobably because of the white paint? I'm not a very good photographer. Any tips?

Don't use a flash or try a bright light pointed indirectly (away from the mini).

I showed my son this post and he said, "Can we go play at their house?" then, "Were going to make a spaceship for that older kid. No, a space station. We'll make it round with small holes. The holes will (hands clamping) lock onto the ships and hold them while the people get out. Then he can come over and we'll play. OK? Can you call him?"

The bottom photo looks to be either motion blur or you were just too close to the ship without adjusting your distance setting on your camera. As for the bleached out mid-shot, perhaps you can put a piece of black electrical tape over the center of the flash, allowing the light to flash around it, because you're getting direct glareback currently. I suggest just experimenting.

Thanks for the photo tips guys. I'll try a few more pics...

Awesome bit of scratch building! Now I want a ag ship.

I was toying with a Classic BSG scenario for KHs- a carrier and a slew of civilian ships running from the Sathar. The ag ship would be great for that.

heres a little scratch built asteroid base (Plannaron from Warriors of teh White Light module)

Its a chunck fof punice stone with beads and bits glued into holes I drilled into it.

Thanks again guys.
I really like those pics of  the astroid base. I want to make some astroids. How did you make yours?

I had an idea for the scenario to use the Ag ship.
Some pirates got a hold of it and are hiding it in an astroid field. (The ship has some type of terra forming plant or something that is valuable) The pirates have a few assault scouts or corvettes cruising around. So, the players have to sneak in or blast their way in. Get aboard the Ag ship and fly it outa there.

It looks like raw pumice for the asteroid. Though I would recommend using a smooth stone and then routing in some crater-like pockmark divits. (If you have a router.) For buildings, I would think you could use cut pieces of pencils, pens, and basically anything you can find.

Never mind the Ag Ship, how did you manage to get the remastered rules printed up and bound so purty?

I just printed them out (The cover is printed on card stock) and 3 hole punched 'em, and put them in one of those report folders with a clear folder.

@ Ascent: I got what I thought were resin cast space terrain off an ebay sale for a really good price but when it arrived it was just punice but still it had a nice look so I used it. Its actually soft enough to us a variable speed drill on and I drilled a 3/8 hole and epoxied a dowel into them mated the dowel with the plastic base from a cheap 2 piece party champaign glass. they look great on my felt mat the only down side it they are top heavy and 3 fell off a book I was transporting them on and the plastic bases cracked and broke. With a little care you could use the variable speed drill much like a router and it'd be probably easier too though the drill bit leaves a smooth mark.

@ Umungus: I toyed with a campaign idea (before running the volturnus campaign) where the PCs are trouble shooters brought in by a corporate owner who is trying to clean up some problems with certain divisions that have cropped up since his little health crisis. He needs them to go to a corporate owned system and find evidence as to whos to blame and solve some problems.
The system exec knows they're head hunters and hes worried, the system security exec resents them and the company bean counter stationed there is a pain about authorizing spending of credits for the team. It a mining op on a mostly unbreathable planet and theres been some workers riots.
One ag ship is there and it produce all the fresh food for the workers but just after the PC's arrival and they've had a chance to pursue some role play encounters the ag ship goes off the air and news leaks out and theirs another workers riot that the PCs get caught in the middle of while security is fairly ruthlessly putting it down and they have to get out of the workers complex and back to executive domes. In finding out what happened security is going to mount an expedition to the ag ship and they give the PCs the, "we dont need your help" routine (the PCs had at their disposal an Eagle lander from teh fan zine and an NPC pilot) so if they go they find that pirates have raided and killed the ag ship's crew (apparently a plant based drug was being grown on the ship to supply the local drug trade among the system inhabitants and the governor is a user- I was to play him as very nervous and fidgety from the first). This was envisioned as a nice low level encounter for starting PCs as there isn't much to fight (a reprogramed robot left by the pirates) but some mysteries to solve and attempt bring the ag ship back lest the starve along with every one else.
I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers!

Dowels would be easy to carve into any shape you want. Dowels of varying diameters would indeed be ideal.

Wow, I forgot how absolutely huge those figs are. Maybe when/if I make my own I'll build them to a smaller fleet action scale. That Sathar battleship is just screaming to fall apart under its own weight.
