Will April 21, 2008 - 2:39pm | It seems a great deal of heat and not much light was generated concerning the orginial Battlestar Galactica, and...that other show. Why don't we discuss them here, so we can return the other thread to fav SF movies. "You're everything that's base in humanity," Cochrane continued. "Drawing up strict, senseless rules for the sole reason of putting you at the top and excluding anyone you say doesn't belong or fit in, for no other reason than just because you say so." —Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stephens, Federation |
Imperial Lord April 21, 2008 - 3:13pm | Ironically, I think you are a little late as myself and FullBleed kinda exhausted the issue. But hey, if anyone wants to chime in... |
w00t (not verified) April 21, 2008 - 5:12pm | I watched the original one with my wife last month (or two). Never seen the new one. Older shows had more character development and less go boom stuff. 1980's action hero's had lots of go boom and no words. Anyone remember having to use a crayon to color in the SF dice in the boxed set? |

That's just *some* of the awards the New Battlestar Galactica has won making it one of the (if not *the*) most critically acclaimed Sci-Fi TV shows of all time. Which is saying a LOT for a show that isn't backed by one of the big network TV channels and is a reimagined version of a show that only lasted ONE season, nearly 30 years ago! But, such acclaim does come with its crowd of detractors (like the winner that started this thread) who just can't stand the fact that this show gets more recognition than their favorite show. Jealousy is always ugly, but it's also a fact of life. In all fairness... the Original BSG did win one award that I know of: A People's Choice Award. It was, afterall, a decent, family oriented, campy, sci-fi show that captured the disco era of sci-fi quite accurately. It was primo 70's TV that just couldn't get traction. And the New BSG does owe the original one a debt of grattitude: Without it, it would not exist. So, as a big fan of the new show, I would like to sincerely thank the original for being just good enough to spawn something better. Thanks BSG! PS: The New BSG also won a spot on TIME Magazines Top 100 TV Shows of all time (a list where the top shows were not sorted by number but graded on a variety of criteria.) 5 other Sci-Fi shows made that list: Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Lost, Star Trek, The Twilight Zone, and X-Files. Do I agree with it? Heck, no. Lists like that are always subjective. But it does show that the new BSG continues to rise to the top... as the cream always does. PSS: I would also like to thank all those envious people that just can't stand it when one of their favorite shows has to live in the shadow of greatness. The more you kick and scream, and carry on like children, the more people like me will take notice. And while we won't think much of you, we might just wonder a bit about what all the fuss is about. I was one of those people who figured that a show derived from a show in the 70's that wasn't that good to begin with, couldn't be worth watching. But then, 3 seasons later, after all the chatter around the New BSG finally got to me, I broke down and gave the show a chance (catching a late-night rerun of the original mini-series.) This was the same process that finally got me to check out "FireFly" and I'm glad that there were enough people out there beating their wardrums over it to make me pause and judge for myself. |
Corvus April 21, 2008 - 10:53pm | ...wow. Just wow. I'm staying out of this one except to voice my personal opinion. I loved the new BSG intensely for a season and a half, but then I got fed up with the ridiculous soap opera plots and the relative lack of action in a show that is intimately dependent on military characters in a situation which demands combat. I like character development -- I have to, I'm a writer -- but I also like action. I quit watching six episodes into Season Three, and I will not be returning, though I am still somewhat interested in whether or not they'll reach Earth. I did so love the Adama Maneuver at the beginning of Season Three, but there should have been a hell of a lot more of that level of awesome. Have fun flaming each other to death, guys. Actually if I remember correctly BSG didnt as many awards in 2007 because of what was happening. Use to be a really great show and then 3rd season was done too fast. But forth might get some praise. I know BSG didnt win last year's peoples' choice award that was actually awarded to Stargate Atlantis which is going on fifth season!!!!!!!!!!!!! Confucious Says: Man with one chopstick go hungry. Sam April 24, 2008 - 10:10am | Argh... my witty comments and such all lost due to the site problem. Oh well, lets move on. I really don't have an axe to grind either way. |
Imperial Lord April 24, 2008 - 12:57pm | Yeah Sam - that happened to me too! And, in retrospect, probably for the best... |
Sam April 24, 2008 - 1:07pm | Totally agree. It was too easy to let that discussion sidetrack us from other things. |
umungus April 24, 2008 - 2:33pm | I like it. I could get all nitpicky I guess, but overall I think it is good. Sure beats the hell out of the other drek that is on TV At least I got to scare an alien rabbit thingy...... |
Procene April 25, 2008 - 1:53pm | I think it's one of the best shows that has ever been on. I too was very skeptical, having been 10 when the original come on--it was cool then, but later I saw how campy it was! I thought we were going to get that all over again. But no, it is great show. It does get soap opera-ish sometimes, but I love the exploration of themes you don't get on other shows, especially religion. |

aramis June 14, 2008 - 4:25pm | Full Bleed: the awards list for NBSG is immaterial when comparing to OBSG... as most of those awards did not exist in 1980. Of the ones that did, most (if not all) did not have a TV award at the time. There were no awards to win, per se, other than the ones oBSG was nominated for... I don't like NBSG not because it "isn't OBSG" but because it is, quite simply, not the kind of show I'd watch. I intensely disliked the characters from the get go, save for Olmos' Adama. I disliked the pessimism evident in the first few shows. I disliked the "Yanks in Space" and "No clear enemy" paradigm of the show. OBSG was aimed at a different kind of audience: families. Having rewatched the whole series again recently, yes, I do feel it holds up. With the recent spate of discussion on other boards about the recent events... I'm not surprised at all that they found [ earth an obliterated world ]... it perfectly fits the whole bitter cynicism evident from the pilot. |
