  • Just discovered this today so just seen a few episodes, it is technically a comedy but basic plot: Humans have been committing genocide on all alien races, and on the constant war path, humans have become logical, emotionless, and ruthless species. The one remaining space faring alien race decides the only way to stop the humans is give them emotions... using a biological nanonite virus, the humans find out the aliens plan to back in time to Earth to release a weapon... humans decide to send their most advanced ship with a new engine type that could possibly time travel... in fact the aliens use the human ship by getting on board right before the time jump and release the weapon on the ship... needless to say this very logical and practle crew of blood thirsty Vulcan like humans go bonkers with emotions... the crew is still driven to save Earth and humanity from the evil alien plan and find a cure for there extremely out of control behaviors, cravings, sexual drives, fight/flight drives and so on. Even the android/cyeborg and ship's computer are effected by the nanonites....

  • for Star Frontiers this has some possibilities, a species could develop a nononite virus weapon that effects emotions of the target species if released on a ship the target species might try to destroy the ship if their government knows... crew might find a cure that kills the virus but are forever effected.

A good list, but you forgot that 1977 epic adventure:

Laserblast

Billy (Kim Milford) has the same problems that many teens have to endure. His mother is inattentive, local cops target him for speeding tickets, his girlfriend's grandfather hates him, and teenaged bullies make fun of his van. Billy finds the keys to his emancipation in the desert, when he stumbles across a laser gun left behind by a pair of aliens. As he exacts revenge upon his unsuspecting tormentors, he becomes overwhelmed by the power of the gun and turns into a crazed, green-faced monster...

2.8/10

Fortunately Stan Lee & Jack Kirby offered up a much better version of that story back in the early sixties...which should be no surprise because they also offered the original tales from the forties. The only plausible part of that 90s film was Scott Paulin's role as the Red Skull, catching Cap's shield and cutting off his own hand as Cap tried to take him along for the V2 rocket ride:

Sick bastard, indeed. Barring that, it ended up worse than Reb Brown's Captain America TV series.

What TV series or Movies would be closest to Star Frontiers?

ExileInParadise's picture

@Bluddworth This is just my opinion, but ...

TV Series:

Star Trek: The Original Series
Star Frontiers draws very heavily on this, especially if you look at the freighter illustrations for Knight Hawks, and United Planetary Federation (UPF) isn't far off from United Federation of Planets (UFP).
Just skip all of the "planets of hats" and "we found ANOTHER bored god?" stories...

Movies that seem entirely Star Frontiers to me:
2001: A Space Odyssey and 2010: Odyssey Two simply because they each got a Star Frontiers module.
Enemy Mine - pound for pound, the most Star Frontiers-seeming movie I can think of
Forbidden Planet - the second-most Star Frontiers seeming movie I could think of
The Black Hole - explore a derelict of robots - a repeated adventure idea in Star Frontiers books
Outland - miners and cops in stations/space bases
Star Trek: The Motion Picture - go find out who's coming...

Many other movies have elements that could be in Star Frontiers:
Contact - this could be the story of the first subspace pi-tachyon contact between Human and Vrusk
Alien and Aliens - first contact gone wrong - guns vs. aliens classic example
Avatar, The Abyss - first contacts type stories
Solaris (2002) - exploring the unknown, first contact of a sorts
Blade Runner - future cop/robots out of control
Pitch Black - escape the crash/hungry locals/planet

That's just a start for me.

I agree with everything Exile said about movies that are the most SF.

TV: Firefly/Serenity minus the gravity drive and this is so Star Frontiers

Original Battle Star Galactica before they canceled it and then brought it back with then having arrived at earth. seems to me that mechanons were toyed with as a counterpart to Cylons. (one episode of the crappy arrived at earth origial BSG about the fate of Starbuck was good, I liked the Enemy Mine story line between Starbuck and the Cylon but not the religious storyline involving immaculate conception. I remember watching this eposide back in the day and having to piss so bad but squirming in the chair trying to hold it unwilling to miss anything till the commercials came on. My parents had company and they all were watching me from the dining room wondering what the hell was going on with me.

I still like this episode today, minus the religious themes.

To some extent Space 1999- love the set and look the Eagle landers were AWESOME!!!! but the story line of the Moon blown out of orbit???? and visiting new star systems every week????
and the later seasons with the shape shifter and the funny rubber/and faux fur suits???? not so much
but the look, the uniforms the set of the moon base yeah Star Frontiers for me.

As corny and low budget as it is: Jason of Star Command. clearly the model for Planaron asteroid base.

Ark II was cool and Star Frontiers -ish,

Damnation Alley anyone one? yes and no on this one.

to a limited degree: Air Wolf and Blue Thunder

Escape from New York.

The original Planet of the Apes- loved their space suits and the plywood mock up of the ship- very crash on Volturnus feel to this movie.

EDIT:
To a certain extent DS9 and I did like the religious themes to this series. There is a certain yazirian flavor to Bjoran religious militancy.

The Episodes Improbable Cause and the Die is Cast from seaons 3 were the first time that a Star Trek space battle had a Star Wars feel. bloody freaking awesome and a personal favorite. i do believe that back in the 90's I had a VHS tape with both episodes recorded on it sans commercials so that I could watch the two episodes as a movie. Even had a nice plastic case for it like the ones at the video store.

Loved the development of the Ferengi culture and the Rules of Acquisition. It took Star Trek in a commercial almost mega corp direction hitherto unknown in Star Trek. And Quarks is one of the best "space bars" depicted in media. love the running gag with Morn not talking. Episode "House of Quark" definet shades of Yazirian goodness here with Quark accidently killing a drunken Klingon in self defense and having to take his place as leader of his house and navigate Klingon society without being killed: cue the dralasite bar owner who accidently kills a yazirian clan leader in self defense and has to take leadership of the clan....
I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers!

Here is a classic, and I use that term loosely, chashing in on Alien.

whole movie (nudity warning)

1985 "Creature".

You know, when you're standing on the surface of Titan and a previously dead crewmember strips naked and starts to take your helmet off you really need to stop thinking with your crotch. In space not only is it advisable to keep it in your pants but also keep your helmet on too!

Bonus points for spacers bringing their hairspray along to the outer solar system to maintain the 80's hairdo. Amazing- no space helmet head!

Oh Yeah:

Silent Running

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silent_Running

Interesting: wikipedia details how the original script and the final film version are different. The original script had aliens and first contact BTW.

I liked this movie as a kid for the robots and the space ship but never understood the logic behind blowing up the domes if all the plant life on earth is extinct. Very Star Frontiers -ish with the robots which would have been level 2 bots but since he reprogramed them to perform surgery?

adapt this storyline to the Frontier to be Yazirian ag ship that got lost during the Star Exodus but eventually turns up in the Frontier. The Fo1 has control of the "Ark" or genetic samples ark on Hentz this ag ship would destroy their monopoly of control and impact GODco as well so the classic mega corp solution? destroy the ag ship. enter PCs and shades of Dramune Run.

EDIT: Question to self: Haven't you been meaning to order a copy of this movie?
