Here's a short video about one of the few gyrojets still out there:

That was interesting and informative but....

This video was even more interesting:

Short clip within the larger video showing weapon being fired apparently back in the 60's

I'd seen videos of gyrojets being fired, but had no idea what they looked like inside nor how they functioned mechanically, beyond written descriptions.

For those interested, I see this as the modern verison of the Gyro Jet.

Here is the video.

It IS the modern gyrojet. Some even call it such. The principle is precisely the same. They just added wings. (Which, if you think about it, are implied in the name "gyro-", as it is based upon the spin of the projectile.) They have pistol versions. These weapons were featured in the movie "Gamer". The guided gyrojets in that movie were based on the tech they were exploring at the time. (I don't know where they have gotten with it, if at all.)

What made a gyrojet round a gyrojet round was the rocket propelent  that was continuously accelerating the round.

This is still a traditional projectile round with the only difference that it has spring activated fins that spin stablize it. The tech is a step toward reducing one of the negatives of the shot gun giving it greater accuracy at greater range.

I'd like to see the civilian model of this without the HE, just a spin stablized 3" slug, talk about knocking down big game at ranges previously unheard of with a shot gun.

Here's an intersection of weapon's technology and gaming:

I was simply referring to the name, not the actual bullet. The name comes from the need to induce spinning.

Modernization project and more indept information on the gryojet and its history:
http://www.deathwind.com/project.htm

I've noticed that no one seems to be taking the "obvious" route and launching gryojet round from low-powered shotgun rounds. It would seem to take away the one obvious down-side of the standard gryojet (no point blank power) and give the 'average' shotgun some serious down-range fire ability. Couple it with any of the "duel-magazine" type shotguns available and you'd have a nice multi-purpose weapon I'd think.

(I'm going to be using drawings/photos of the UTG and Keltec for my SF game I think :) )

Actually the military has some spin stablized shot gun ammo that has little fins that deploy when the round exits the barrel giving the shot gun round greater range and accuracy.

As seen here in the future weapons episode on the new automatic shotgun, some of the new ammo very much reminded me of gyrojet weapons.

True and don't forget we've got guided bullets now that work if are very VERY expensive per round :)
