every so often i come across a blog, particularly the old school gamers that post about a pick up game

This one looks to have been played on roll 20

Favorite line: "Gimme all your credits and a PoBoy to go."
I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers!

My RPG group may play SF at some point. We played it very many times from '82 to '88 and were all slightly obsessed by it. If we do play it again, I want to add some details about via my blog. Aside from that, I want to add some other SF-related stuff to it, kicking off with 'In Praise of...', as I've done with some other RPGs (Car Wars, Twilight:2000) Smile

I think there there should be a nod of the head to Car Wars in SF- on one planet the locals happen to be into vehicle combat. Arena duels and even on road battles.

That sounds like an amusement park to me. Day Pass comes with some driving and gunnery practice (all low-powered lasertag?), a week-long one allows you to trick out your vehicle.

Bringing your own vehicle allows a deluxe pass, which has other benefits at the hotel/restaurants.

I'm not overly fond of Zeb's Guide...nor do I have any qualms stating why. Tongue out

The original Deathrace movie is a whoot and was one of Silvestore Stallone's first movies. The remakes are done well but my opinion is if you are into that type of movie you will like it.
Sounds like a great job but where did you say we had to go?

Beyond a shared title and a couple character names there is no relation between the movies. I enjoyed the original for the zany spoof that it was ("Not a grenade, but a HAND grenade"), and the Statham flick for its Car Wars action sequences.

I've not seen the sequels to the Statham flick, and it appears to be a major cast change for each one.

There are quite a few Car Wars-esque movies that were either made in Italy or elsewhere with Italian backing. Most were straight to video. A few aren't too bad.

Bear in mind that, strictly speaking, Mad Max, Deathrace 2000 and some others aren't Car Wars. They're more in the vein of another version of Car Wars called 'Chassis & Crossbows'. Car Wars vehicles and weapons are a whole order above Mad Max etc stuff in terms of technology etc. In fact, it's more like this excellent short story by Garth Nix: http://www.seanet.com/~owenmp/fiction/cuckoo.html

As for vehicle stuff in SF, I wonder whether something similar to the console game 'Wipeout' might be an option, using special types of aircars that are limited to a certain height and are fitted with various 'extras'.
