Are you having a problem with the images being spread out too?

The site crashed and has not yet been repaired.  Bill knows about it but I suspect is swamped with other stuff.  As for getting them through DriveThruRPG, Larry shifted distribution of the magazine completely over to DTRPG starting with issue 19, reason unknown (although I can guess at some ideas).  That's just they way they decided to do things.

This site was suppose to get an upgrade which never happenned and SFman site has crashed and no telling if it will get back up. We, as a community should face the possibility that the custodians of this site might not continue to support it and consider what should be done for the good of the community.

The projects and forums of this site are a great resource for the community but what do we do if it all goes away?

Well as long as I have a say, this site will never go away (baring a natural disaster that destroys my server and backups).  While Bill created the site and Larry maintained it, and they pay for the domain registration every year, I've hosted it on my server for years and I have all the data.

I think at worst, we'd have to shift to a new domain name temporarily.  So the location might change but the site will still be around.

Bill told me he is still trying to get the SFMan site back up.

I just found out this morning that #23 was posted for me so , my apologies for not getting the word out sooner. Hopefully the next issue will be posted soon and I will announce it here.

As for the RPGNow issue, that is where the issues are, and I do not have the insight as to why. I think Larry told me before but I do not remember anymore.

We should figure out a way to get all of the SFMan downloads added to this site as a backup. I would think that would be a wise descision. I will email Bill about it today.

I have all the SF issues. As for #23's quality - LOL, I'm still reading it. The adventure is BIG!

My biggest problem with RPGNow/DriveThruRPG is that it can be extremely difficult for me to actually download stuff from them. I get stuck in a "your DL is ready to go" loop that never actually DLs anything. I have to manually retry the DL anywhere between 20-100 times before I actually get a successful DL. Issue #23 for example, took me 2 hours to finally DL. I don't know how many times I had to retry the download but it takes about 20 seconds per attempt. I never had issues DLing stuff directly from the SFMan website though when that option was still available.

This is an issue that I suspect is due to my ultra crappy satellite connection and the RPGNow/DriveThruRPG site(s) not getting along too well.

Of course I also had huge issues attempting to submit stuff for the ezine using the standard channels - my stuff would never upload properly.

Concerning issue quality: As always Krax, the presentation of the 'zine looks very nice. It's a long issue and I'm still reading, but the content is great as well - I especially like the equipment, creatures and the system brief. And of course, Shell's cover rocks! :)

I like that this site has evolved into a community effort and common costodianship.  We can keep this going with the spirit that prevails.  As long as we focus on giving and not taking we will do well.  The magazines are the same story.  It is about what we can give and delivering what players and referees of the game need to keep SF alive.  We keep giving and the magazines will survive.  Giving content and giving work to publish it.

I like issue #23 overall. I'm not too keen on the Andorians - a bit too 'elf meets Deanna Troi' for my tastes. One thing you may want to remove is the 'Max 2' illustration at the foot of page 66. This looks far too close to the robot Maximilian (from the movie 'The Black Hole'). As this is owned by Disney, you probably don't want to have anything that's covered by their intellectual property. I know th eimage isn't an exact match, but maybe it's better to err on the side of caution.

So I wasn't alone in this.

I have yet to successfully download any of the SFman from that site, I have limited time since I started my new job earlier this year so I invoke the three strikes rule. Limited time combined with no access to the issues equals abstained involvement with the enite affair. I do miss the SFman...

That would be nice...but the point is if I am having problems downloading, and Rollo is having problems downloading, how many other people (SF.us and non-SF.us alike) are missing out on them? It becomes pointless to publish when you can not distribute.

I would also be more than happy to e-mail the PDFs to you Shack - if Sam hasn't already done so. Of course, you have a point. I wonder if anyone else has trouble with the downloads from those sites?

I always attributed it to my satellite connection because I seem to always have some sort of issue with pretty much everything I do online.

Anyway, if you (or anyone else for that matter) wants the PDFs e-mailed, just send me a note with the address to send it to and I'll do so. :)

I've never had a problem with DTRPG (and related sites) and we use it to distribute the Frontier Explorer as well (of course you can also get FE from our website to).  It may be the slow connection combined with the relatively large file sizes.  I have a lot of bandwidth so it's never an issue for me.

A suggestion on the difficulty downloading issue: I just uploaded #22 to the Star Frontiersman Project.
If this works perhaps we can put copies of all of them there? It would be good if someone had jpg images of the covers so that they could be added to the thumbnail image.

I was afraid of that, Larry set it up with singular access for the downloads and uploads. Latter gave me site wide moderator powers so I guess that gives me greater access for the purpose of moderation. Unfortunately I cannot edit the settings for the sfman project to open up the downloads and uploands.

We might need to start a new project and call it magazine stand. I would be loath to put the FE issues in though as Tom makes an effort to track howmany downloads we have of each issue. however putting the sfman there and possibly the dragon, ares, and polyhedron archives as well as the now out of print fan zine for Alternity might be a good idea. What do you all think?

The new project should link over to FE rather than have the files.   That way the FE site can keep count of the downloads.

Obviously the suggestion to hold off on creating a new project wasn't heeded.  That's okay.  However, I might want to point out a few things.

1) The same reason given for not posting the Frontier Explorer issues applies to the Star Frontiersman.  Bill and Larry want to track their downloads as well.  In fact, this is probably one of the main reasons that they shifted to using DriveThurRPG (and related sites) as their main distribution channel, besides the larger audience (The download ratio between DTRPG and the website for FE is about 20 to 1).  The site provides useful tools for tracking downloads and sending messages out to those who have downloaded.  And this is probably a reason they were never posted here in the first place they wanted the distribution to be centralized to ease in tracking.  The only reason issue 9 is on this site is because at the time, we (Larry and I) couldn't get a hold of Bill to get it up on the SFMan site (this was before Larry took over running the magazine and I was the senior editor for issues 9, 10 and 11) so we put it up here and on my site to that it would be available immediately instead of waiting a month or two.

2) Bill and Larry consider the Star Frontiersman to be property of DWD Studios and own the copyright and trademark on the magazine.  As such they control the creation and distribution.  It's not to say they wouldn't allow it, but you should probably ask them for permission to post before you go and do it.  Technically, posting without their permission is a copyright infringement.  Since Bill technically owns this site and the SFman, it's not a big deal but it still circumvents the tracking issue in item 1.

Anyway, Bill and Larry are free to correct me if I'm mistaken but I think the above comes pretty close to the mark.

I would also be very interested in receiving an issue. If reason is tracking downloads -- how about a simple cloud service liek box.com? The bandwidth wouldn't be an issue there, and they have a decent donwload counter. And the download link would be no problem at all, without the need to register to some service ...
