Every rule system has to decide how to deal withcombat and damage in a simplicity versus realism conflict. Generally speaking the easier and quicker a system is the less it will reflect reality (yes there are exceptions).

To use a previous example Battletech was fairly simple with a hit doing a set amount of damage which was marked off of armor boxes. Meanwhile the same company's Renegade Legions game required a template for each weapon to show how that weapon did damage to armor and boxes were colored in based on where they hit. More realistic but did you really want to track how four tanks were hit by missiles, lasers, mines, projectiles and small arms fire.
Sounds like a great job but where did you say we had to go?
