Terra Nova

Watched this on netflix and found some inspiration for Star Frontiers.
Think of a outpost somewhere difficult to reach, perhaps in the Formad Cluster or a system surrounded by nebula (assuming you can't void-jump directly from another system).
  • Technology is something that's is relied upon and therefore required. I was surprised the number of non-tech's at the base (at least it seemed like techs were far and few).  Doctors and researchers were prevalent due to the genre.
  • Law would come from the founders of the outpost (company, sponsored by a government or the UPF, religious reason, etc.) Star Law/UPF would have some type of jurisdiction and responsibility for the outpost. I'm guessing these protective organizations would have a say in where an outpost is located, since they would need to arrange protection services. Another discussion about frontier law here.
  • Supplies would start out in high-demand and trail off as the outpost became self-sufficient. Unless the outpost is for something like mining where the purpose is to gather a resources for as long as it's available and then head out when it's dried up. What happens when something runs out? Would the sponsor drop whole buildings or use local resource to craft buildings? Would manufacturing equipment be more important than infrastructure?
  • Splitting the outpost over disagreements would offer lots of adventure ideas. Rival corporations having invested interest in a number of discoveries or resources (Mission to Alcazzar).

Off Topic
When I look at the star map to decide to place something, start and adventure, etc., I tend to shy away from Outpost 1 area, the suspected location of the sathar!

you could just use New Pale- its easily adaptable to that part of the setting.

1. Dangerous dinos (according to the Dragon article Volturnus Connection)
2. Pale usurping authority and renaming it New Pale from Cygnus Omicron IX (according to jedion)
3. small farming outpost (according to canon)
4. mega corp with a not so good reputation horning in (partly according to canon and a logical extrapolation)
5. HUSP criminal/terrorist organization present and active (according to the dragon article "volturnus connection")

too bad the series got cancelled.
I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers!

For those that don't know the series;

Or use Torrent!
Unless you're running a early-frontier campaign I'm not sure New Pale would be considered. It's "light" population may be due to this high gravity and who wants to work on a farm? ;-)

Colony worlds can get isolated for alot of reasons. Forgot his name but the guy who left the Roanoke colony was supposed to return next spring with more supplies but run into economic and political problems and did not get back for three years. CROATOA
Sounds like a great job but where did you say we had to go?

Ah, sweet! Great deal for a $1.

If I had more than $11 spending money between the son unit and I, I would have picked one up for jedion357 (He's been great about sending extra stuff my way). :-)
