Sports on low G worlds

Our characters spend a lot of time in conflict, surviving the wilds of the frontier. To relax, what sports would be found on low-G worlds? Characters could enjoy as viewers, work for a sports crew or enter themselves.

How low-G are we talking? .5 gravity might not be that much of a difference except for Yazirians. If the gravity is to low there isn't any atmosphere unless you are in a dome. That could be interesting.

Let's say it is a really low gravity world. A popular sport would be Competitive Team Formation Jumping.

Teams of 10 to 20 members leap into the air and must make two separate formations on the way up and two on the way down. One points are given for level of difficulty of formation and flawless execution.
Sounds like a great job but where did you say we had to go?

Hentz- .7g

Inner Reach- .8g

Genesis- .8g though I cant see PGC inviting peeps to is secret research outpost for sports.

Alcazzar- .8g

Histran- .6g

Lossend- .7g

Kraatar- .6g

In the Rim
Faire- .7g I can see the ifshnits organizing major sports events for the merchandizing

Ifshna- .6g This planet has a RRS station

Pi'Ka'Nair- .5g

Forge- .8g

Fhloid- .8g just an outpost dedicated to the military (Flight) probably not suitable for a sports event.

Hentz and Histran are yazirian worlds and likely there is a passion for gliding.

Lossend is a good possibility for a major sporting event but low gravity and the Frontier's highest mountain almost make it certain that climbing to the top of Mount Spire requires major support in hardware.

Inner Reach seems like a good place to stage a low g sport event but what sorts of sports would be more fun, more exciting in low g? Do dralasite strong men travel to inner reach to strut their stuff?
I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers!

Lossend, Mt Sipre could be a spectacular climb but the real danger is all of the lossodragons that live on Mt Spire.  If you fall you may not hit the ground because a lossodragon will grab you for lunch.

We've discussed safari activities on Lossend and a possible off road Baja style race on Laco. Skydiving and gliding on low g yazirian colonies which is more of a hobby then a sport. I'm not coming up with a low g sport. Not even sure of a sport would play a big role in the setting game wise other then as a story hook or PC background. I think I would allow a starting character to start with a third level skill connected to a sports background but also saddled with a disability from a sports injury- leg crushed in a racing crash slows movement by a small amount over racial norm but character starts with third level driving (skilled Frontier). I'D also treat that character as having 3rd level knowledge concerning the racing circuit and about say Laco in general plus maybe a contact on Laco or in the racing world that the player would design but I would run. There would be the possibility to fix the disability - when player has enough money he gets the leg replaced with cybernetic implant or has a new one grown in a bacca tank. Crash could have shattered his nerves requiring a PER check in high stress driving conditions or he suffers a -20 to skill roll; this might be fixed through months of visiting a psych specialist using the psychopathology subskill or a successful hypnotism roll in game but hypnotism has short term duration.

Other possible sports backgrounds: fencing- starts with level two melee weapons. Competition martial arts- level 2. Holonews helicopter pilot. Olympic swimmer- double endurance swimming and boost to swimming speed and can always find work as a life guard or swim instructor. Might consider letting the player roll the d100 dice to find out what his ranking WAS on his home planet much like a character taking the Zebs Guide chef skill can roll for his chef ranking in the frontier.

For any sport where hitting is a part of the game low G worlds might make things more interesting. On Hentz a 100 kg linebacker would only weigh 70 kg but since mass is not affected she would still be a big target. If the item were something smaller like a ball then you would need to dramatically increase the playing field.
Sounds like a great job but where did you say we had to go?

I read a story once where the crew of a ship released a bunch of water in their 0-g hold and it formed a huge ball in the middle. Then they all swam through it as a recreational time during their voyage. I believe that it got recycled back into the system. I hope no one peed in the pool.Smile

Only if you haven't already passed on your genes.
