Just openning the old debate of jump transit being instantaneous or does a ship spend 1 day in "Hyper" per light year travelled. There was some confussion in KHs IIRC and I'd like to know what our preference is?

a jump is instantaneous or
much like in Star Wars where Luke and Obiwan take time to train and Chewie plays chess with the droids.

I vote for instantaneous travel KH style.  There is no steering during the jump so you have to be lined up properly or you wind up somewhere other than you expected.

Its probably nostalgia for Star Wars but I like the idea of taking time to travel. However my gut tells me that instantaneous is probably closer to what reality will be if FTL ever move from the realm of fantasy and magic to reality. So I feel very much on the fence concerning it.

I believe that void travel is probably near instantaneous once the ship reaches jump speed. The actual traveltime being how long it takes for the ship to reach jump speed and afterward manuevering around and then firing up those thrusters to decelerate. This of course means that the ship will be entering the system aft first.

That was pretty much the "retcon" reason for taking 10-hours per light year to calculate the jump. (YOU spend 10 hours with a slide rule staring and numbers per day and see how far you get :) )

I like it for the reason it's mostly NOT Traveller and a "week" in jump space no matter how far you go. Sure the numbers don't line up to the original AD "one-day-per-lightyear" but it seems more in-context than a hyperjump or something.
