Someone tweeted this and I've watched 5 minutes so far. (caution is advised)

"I attack them using my...(Player looks at character sheet) Additional Notes." GM: "It has no effect". My funny bone not only was struck, I think it snapped. :-) #dnd

"I'm afraid I'm going to have to ask for your character sheet."

THIS I GOTTA USE IN A GAME!

Is this TV?
What have I been missing for the last 20 years !!!!!

So.. this is interesting.
What if the Referee rolled all the dice?
Here's my thoughts;
  1. Speeds up game play.
  2. Adds a neat twist to game play for Referee's that are "fast on their feet". Or a Referee that is fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants. (Like me!)
  3. Allow the players to roll their own damage dice OR summarize damage using averages. For example; a weapon that list damage as 2d10 becomes 11, 1d10 becomes 5.
Note: This style is already used by play-by-post games.

That Hawthorne guy was totally metagaming.

If he has no character sheet does he use the stats of his own physical self?  "You are a chubby level 1 commoner, age 66 with no weapons or armor and only average attributes.  You have a -2 age penalty to CON, your best score is INT 11."

A game with no character sheet would be fun.
The GM outlines the story, everyone participates.
Everything is a d20 roll; 11 or better and the player gets to say what happens, 10 or lower and the GM decides what happens. Make sure to add your characters modifier to the roll.

For example;
GM - you are surrounded by goblins, they pull knives and start charging from the woods.
PC1 - I'm a fighter so I'll say I'm very strong and somewhat dexterous. I swing at the first goblin I see (rolls d20), a 15. OK... well. As the goblin charges me I drop to one knee and hold the butt of my sword against my hip skewering him like a pig!

PC2 - I'm a magic use, I case "magic rocket". Ahh.. a 4 plus my intelligence mod of +4, that's 8. GM; OK, the spell goes off, a magical rocket complete with gaseous exhaust streaks towards a group of 3 goblins. Just as it's about to strike a gleaming battle axe blades gets in the way. It deflects harmlessly almost hitting a bee's nest.

Metagaming made that episode fun!

Pretty funny and overall well done.

However, I wish (FOR ONCE) there would be an accurate depiction of RPG play - good RPG play.

Should have a camera around for when I make my PCs cry with tears of joy and agony.

Yeah, that's what I'm talking about...

LOL!  If your PC's are crying then I think you're playing with a bunch of wussies.

I seen this on TV - the network advertised as an AD&D episode, so I HAD to watch it! There is something special about a D&D-themed episode, like with Dexter's Lab, Futurama, and so on. As odd as the episode was, I even count that strange gaming episode from Deep Space 9 as a D&D episode.

And yes, Hawthorne was totally metagaming! I have little tolerance for "rule-lawyers", but peaking at the DM's notes is a big "no-no"!

I have player's peak at my notes at the gaming table more that I'd like to admit. We stand up around a bench. If they use that knowledge I throw them a curve ball. One game I brought HeroScape mini's with me - they basis are a little large for 1" grid maps for a 4e game - I wanted the player's to think I was playing HS after the gaming sessions. When a player used GM knowledge, p00f, out come HeroScape DnD'ish mini's and I start to weave a story.

Really keeps me on my toes. I like games that are off-the-cuff.

This was an excellent episode of Community and I'm glad i got to see it.

Hawthorne was not metagaming, he was cheating. No two ways about it.

Having the DM roll all of the dice is very, very old-school from some of the older AD&D and D&D books. I think it was used in this episode either because 1) it allowed gameplay to move more quickly or 2) the writers are not familiar enough with the game.  It worked in either case.
