Caveats for Issue 9
  • Were not sure if the layout artist will be available to do the layout for this issue. With that said, a few of us are going to try to make the layout like Issue 8.
  • Artwork is always needed.
  • Some submission will not make Issue 9 but will be in a future issue guaranteed.
  • The Star Frontiersman Team will be scheduling publication dates so that the community is informed.

I don't know.  If the content was different, maybe a newsletter might not be so bad.  However, I'd like to see the Frontiersman pick back up and the last thing we want to do is dilute the amount of content available.  We seem to have a hard enough time as it is getting submissions together.  (Of course, I think that will change if we can get a regular publication schedule)

I had offered to help out when Bill first asked for volunteers but with a deferral.  Basically I said that I'd be more than happy to help but that if he had other volunteers who seemed more eager to by all means let them have a go.  I'm officially removing my deferral.  I'll help in any way I can.  In fact, if the current staff wants to dump it all on me this weekend, I can almost guarantee I'll have it out by the 19th unless it is completely in shambles.  I leave Sunday morning for a week-long collaboration meeting at SLAC (The Stanford Linear Accelerator Center).  I'll have all of Sunday free and then meetings from 9-5, dinner and then free time for the rest of the day on the weekdays (plus I usually get up around 5:30am so I can work on it in the morning as well).  No wife, no kids, my time will be completely my own.  My current plan is to bang out a bunch of features on my website and my Knight Hawks computer game but if I get the Frontiersman material, I'll hammer that out instead first.

Sounds like the only alternative for the time being. I volunteer my services for layout for this magazine. If anyone can forward the layout for the magazine, brill. If not, not a biggie, I'll put something together. Anyone got a nifty name for this mag?

Just sent an e-mail to Bill asking for manger rights to Frontiersman for elpotof, TerlObar, and myself. I agree with you Terl about keeping the one magazine and not diluting our publications, but unless we get control and access to the files, we're not going anywhere.

So in case we are forced to go the second magazine route, what about JumpSpace; or Lost Horizons; or the Sathar Wars Chronicles?

I can't see re grouping and splitting resources to come up with another zine or newsletter. The content is done and submitted. I think the best thing would be to just acquire all the content and stick with the same Frontiersman format.

The guys who volunteered and don't have the time to do work on it just need to pass it off to others.

Seems like an easy solution to me.

I can't see that it would take very long to use the previous issue as a template and put the articles and artwork in it.

You could always have those folks wanting to work on the magazine and then send the finsihed draft to Bill (as an executive producer role) for final approval and then posting.

Deffinately would want Bill to give his blessing.
We just need some sort of communication from whoever is in charge at the moment.

Bottom line.  No offense intended, but the wrong crew has the reigns right now and the sooner they step down and hand them off to others who will follow through, the better.  They're apparently in way over their heads here... and what's happening is that many of them have just crawled under a rock rather than face up to their failure to live up to their intentions.

Mistake 1:  Wrong personel.
Mistake 2:  Setting a deadline the personel couldn't live up to.
Mistake 3:  Making flimsy excuses.
Mistake 4:  Thinking that SFman can actually continue to be SFman without Bill.

Without Bill the mag will die and this site will die (it's on life support as is.)  As much as he'd probably like to see it flourish without his participation, it's just not going to happen.  Most of us are here because of the mag and because he launched this site on the back of the mag.  And right now there is no personality or producer around here strong enough to hold it all together.

I fear that even if the next issue is smashed together by a compentent individual, at this point it's going to lack the identity that the previous issues had.  There simply is no competent editor in the mix.  It'll be like producing a crappy sequel to a good movie, so what's the point in delaying the inevitable?

I say let SFman hibernate.  If Bill want's to make another mag some day, he can do it.  This is a non-profit project, so there is no need to maintain branding.

I agree with what you are saying Full Bleed. It is a shame. Bill started a cool thing. Too bad it failed without him around.

It is frustrating that the task was trusted to a few people that don't even have th scrote to pass it off. They must not have an ounce of Yaz' in them.

Hey guys I worked a heck of a lot of hours on the issue and so did w00t. We were down three people when we were formatting the articles, and there wasnt much material either. I think we had ten good submissions that could put together into the magazine. The most things we had we art. Art is great but that isnt what people just want, people want more info for their gaming, campaign hooks, and whatnot.

So, what is the current status of the issue? People just want to know what is going on. When we don't hear anything we think that you just bailed.

Glad to hear that you are still around.

We're very happy that you and W00t have put so much effort into getting this done. What we're only saying is that there are many of us that would be willing to help, seeing as how you have significant time/work/life issues going on now. All you have to do is let us know, give us the keys, and let us help. It doesn't have to be an extremely large zine ...

From the last time I formatted articles I had done about twenty five pages, which was two or three large articles and that was it.

Thanks for the update. That is the first time you said that you had done any pages. Twenty five sounds adequate for an issue. Heck, issue one was only 18 pages. I think most here have said that they would still be happy with smaller issues.

So, why not ship that puppy?

Would the Corona Phoenix suffice?

http://starfrontiers.us/node/1281

I was going to suggest the Timeon Clipper from that section, but would have to secure Parriah's permission first as it was originally his concept and I merely edited/expanded upon it to suit the flavor of my campaign.

I'll fire the Phoenix off in an email along with some deckplans.

Gergmaster sent me the files and I'm working on formatting them now.  We have plenty of main content for the issue.  I currently have four formatted articles and they fill ~18 pages.  I've got several more articles to do still.  Looking at the content, what we really seem to need is some more classified ads for the back.  From the looks of it, we only have the one I submitted months ago.  Send them to me directly or to the submissions e-mail and Gergmaster can forward them to me.

Okay, things are coming along nicely.  Look for about a 48 page issue this time.  I could make it longer but I'll save about 26 pages of fiction for the next issue :-).  The main articles are formated and roughly layed out.  I have the cover done (although I need the credit for theh cover art).  What's left is the hard part:  filling in all the white space at the end of each article and final proofreading.  I have some gadgets and some illustartions and artwork for filling in the space, it's just a matter of placing things where they make the most sense.

I also need authors for the following two articles.  If you sent them in please PM me with the name you want in the by-line.  I think I know who wrote them but want to be sure.  The two articles are:

Destiny Run (story)
and
It'll Ride Up With Wear

I also need to do the classified ad section so you still have a chance to send me more ads.  In any case, it's coming along.  I didn't get the material until Monday so I didn't have most of the day on Sunday to work on it but I might still get it out by Friday.  We'll see.  It's midnight, I'm going to bed.

A fun experient (for issue 10 or later) would be to write the whole issue from a Sathar point of view.. a kind of Sathar Military Briefing (their version of news).  Try to make loads of stuff documenting perspectives on the core races, make some Sathar Equipment, maybe a knight hawks scenario, rehash the Sessu or perhaps even another Sathar offshoot... etc.  Seems like enough material can be slammed together to make an issue out of it without even much effort.

Anyhow, nice to see that folks are getting things back on track.  Cheers!

Hey guys, I'm almost done with the layout.  I just have to do the table of contents and the classifieds.  Also, I could use 2 small (landscape oriented) pictures, preferably of creatures to drop into some small white spots.  Finally, with all the layout revisions, I currently have an odd number of pages so I need a filler.  I do have a one page article I could remove but I'd rather fill something in instead.  If you have a map or full page picutre you'd like me to drop in send it to me tonight.  Otherwise I'll find something myself.

Hey guys the zine is done. However TerlObar and myself are going to look it over and make sure everybody whose material was placed in the zine is credited. That shouldn't take more than a few minutes. From there we can do the last minute touchups and give you guys that zine. If TerlObar and myself aren't busy we'll try get the zine to you as soon as possible on Friday. Sorry about the wait again guys and good job getting the submissions to the zine in such a crunch of time.
