    "What's New" Color Change

    Issue Number:
    161
    Severity:
    Minor
    Description:
I was thinking about how sometimes, there's nothing new in What's New for hours or even a full day, but I spend a lot of time checking for anything new in What's new during those times. If you made it so that if there's nothing new it goes gray, like the rest of the tabs, and then goes blue when there's something new, that would be great. It would even be better if it only goes blue when there's something new since the last time you visited the What's New page so that you don't have to click the "Mark all Read" button every time.

This wouldn't have to be a dynamic feature. It just updates on page loads.

    What do you think?

well here's the only problem with that.  Right now, the What's New page takes the longest to build on my server before sourcing it to you (the client) because I iterate through all site content, qualify if you're a member or a manager and not banned, then build the table for all the content related to that project, then move on to the next project.  As the quantity of projects grows, that will get even worse.  If I went through this determination process to seek What's New count (plus prequalify it by checking to see if you've been to the What's New page since each new item)... and did this on every single page load, my server would go bonkers with load.  There is another support issue asking for an indicator too, and I'm concerned about the idea.

For me, the what's new indicator would never show inactive, as you update twenty things per day haha...

I'm honestly not sure I am willing to provide this feature, but I'll do some tests and see what I can do.

I suggest we freeze feature requests and only report bugs.
Bill needs to start playing SF and not coding new stuff in the site.

Dat's my opinion and I'm sticking to it.

First, right now, it already shows 20 times a day, but not to me, but because of me, so if it's always blue anyway, what does it hurt? Wink

Second, you can't just tell it to identify when the page itself receives new information instead of putting it through all that?

Do I need to remind you that Bill has already said that he's a big boy and knows how to pace himself and fulfill requests if and when he feels like it? Tongue out I take his word that he has no OCD or uncontrollable addiction to fixing the site. Smile

LOL. I posted that more for Bill than for you or anyone else asking for features. He can't pull himself away from the site. :-( (especailly with new neat ideas)

I should take away his admin rights. hehe ;-)

I put the code in to change the background color to red when you have something new, and make the text blink to alert you (will only blink in FF).  We can try this and see if it significantly impacts server loading.  Basically, it's iterating through my "what's new" function on every page refresh for every browser every time... we'll see how well that works.

If it's not too heavy, we can see if we can add the additional functionality of not being red if you've been to the What's New page since the most recent update timestamp...

What's wrong with making this site look like Las Vegas in the 70's???

    Don't answer that.  :)

Actually, it does Bill. I came in here to give a note that blinking is annoying, and I liked the blue. It says "There's something a little different, but go on with your browsing; it's not important unless you're keeping an eye on it." The blue also doesn't break the tab menu. Smile

What I was thinking was gray if there's nothing new and blue if there is something new. The blue stands out enough.

How about this:  Go on doing what you're doing and whenever you want to come click on "What's New" you can?  How about that?  :P

There.  It's blue background when there's something new to see, and gray otherwise.

I guess this is fully resolved.

It would also be good to have this little feature on the Links and Feedback tabs as well (unless you were to include the Links and Feedback updates on the What's New page). Smile

The "What's New" tab doesn't seem to be working today. It has only been gray for me. When I first logged on this morning, it was blue, but then it was gray for the rest of the day after I read the What's New page.

I've temporarily turned the feature off.  A few people were having timeouts and difficulties.  I informed them that I'd turn off that feature and see if the problem is resolved.  If not, then the problem is on their end.  I'm investigating another method.
