Just saw a Star Trek Voyager episode and could have sworn Janeway called them life pods.

Got me thinking that life pods sounds like your putting a nice spin on it. No doubt on star liners they like to sound hopeful and use the term life pod.

No doubt there must a culture that would disdain to call it a life pod and have domething colorful: the coward pod, chicken sh*t pod etc.

In your game what do you prefer to call them?

Germane to topic:
Lifeboats? Escape craft?
I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers!

Individual Destruction Survival caft refered to ad IDS craft or vehicle. IDS being a designation for all modes of escaping a destroyed ship.

Among the crew IDS stands for "In the Deep Sh*t"

That's called "politically correct". Wink

That said, I like the ISD spin.

Life pod suggests to me that it's used for a single passenger. Escape pod instead suggests something that can carry more than one. But either works for both I guess. Maybe a life pod is something that is also a cryogenic or stasis system, so that it preserves life in a sense. An escape pod keeps you alive, but you're still conscious etc.

BTB an escape pod accommodates only one.

Speaking of escape pods, while I was searching for images on sci fi launches/pods, I came across this website with some interesting images:

It's commonly used in science fiction as a spacey version of "lifeboat," not as a politically correct version of "escape pod."

I always thought it was called a "life pod" or "escape pod" to sound more science-fictiony than the original term "life boat"... boats float, pods go in vacuum.
